moral decadence in secondary schools

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1.    Background of the Study
Immorality is dreaded in the society in the time of old, but these days, it has become part and parcel of our everyday life. The school which is seen as an agent of socialization has little or no role to play when it comes to moral decadence. Moral decadence as phenomenon has been over looked in our schools today and it has lead to the poor breed of students in our nation Nigeria. The students who are suppose to be leaders of tomorrow are involving themselves in vices capable of destroying their future, because these students are the future of the Nigerian nation and something need to be done if we are to have good leaders in the future having good qualities moral decadence has eaten into the fabrics of our secondary schools and the Nigerian society as a whole.

This has been of great burden to our educationist, political leaders and the general society at large and it has given rise to society at large and it has give rise to various forms of programmes, conference etc which are being put in place to address this ugly trend and examples includes: "was against indiscipline" (WAI) which was established by the military administration in 1984 and was later set in place to mobilize the people of Nigeria for social justices, self-reliance and economic discovery, the 1990 national conference on discipline and motivation in schools", ex-president Obasanjo's Anti – corruption campaign" a crusade against examination malpractice as in Delta State and the "joint consultative committee on education" (JCC) on student unrest in post primary and tertiary institutions.
It has been seen that the problem of moral decadence has been in existence for a long period of time, which is not only seen in the Nigeria society but the world at large. Howeller, little has been done in addressing this ugly trend inherent in our schools today and more research undertakings need to be done in order to address the causes and control measures being put in place to make Nigeria a better place and the world at large.
1.2.    Statement of Problems
Moral decadence has eaten into the future of students in Emede Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole. The actions of moral decadence manifested among secondary students are numerous to mention but a few are seen and they includes: pre-marital sex, truancy, cultism, drug abuse, stealing, examination malpractice. Others are insult and assault i.e. fighting members of school staff, heating up of junior students, wickedness, unnecessary demonstration and willful destruction of school properties and general disrespectful behaviour.
These problems are seen in almost every school in Isoko South Local Government Area. Moral decadence has lead to high rate of school work which has lead to the frequent problems of examination malpractice in secondary schools. Our society is filled with young people who are suppose to be in school but are all over the place causing some havoc or the other and example of this is the 'Area boy' which is known in our Nigerian society especially people are all over the place looking for a means of survivals though through the wrong procedure and the problem is that ninety percent of them are school drop outs. This ugly trend has lead to the high increase of armed robbery prostitution, societal unrest to mention but a few and the question then is to ask ourselves what has lead to the high increase of moral decadence in our secondary schools.
1.3.    Purpose of the Study
The main aim of this research is to investigate the cause of moral decadence among secondary school students. Specifically the study will examine the following:
1.    How family background of students can result into moral decadence among students.
2.    How adolescence stage can result into moral decadence among secondary school students.
3.    How mass media can result into moral decadence among secondary school students.
4.    How school teachers can contribute to moral decadence.
5.    How the absence of moral education in secondary schools can contribute to moral decadence.
1.4.    Research Questions
1.    Does the family background of students contribute to moral decadence in schools?
2.    In what way can the adolescence stage contribute to moral decadence?
3.    Does the mass media contribute to moral decadence among secondary school students?
4.    In what way can the school teacher contribute to moral decadence?
5.    Does the absence of moral education in schools result into moral decadence among secondary school students?
1.5.    Scope and Limitation of the Study
The problem of fund and high cost of transportation to areas where materials are available is a limitation to the study. I am also limited by adequate research work on moral decadence.
1.6.    Significance of Study
This research work will contribute to knowledge and also be a source of reference material for Nigeria students embarking on a research work and also for future studies.
I also hope that it will be of immense help to curriculum planners to enrich the content of the school curriculum and also to educational planners which will enable them to plan for the future of the Nigeria students.

However, it will be a great source of enlightenment to parents on problem of secondary school students and how they can be source of help in making the best out of the Nigerian students. The teachers are not left out because it will help them exemplify good morals to the students due to the fact of being a role model capable of emulation. To the mass media, it will send as a warning against vices that publicized and shown on air which are capable of ruining the future of the Nigerian students.
Finally, it will serve as an eye openness to the government and the general public and reawaken in them the need and importance of imbibing in the students socially acceptable way of behaviour and need to inculcate in the students good morals.
