Iran sends monkey into space

Iran said on Monday it had launched a live monkey into space, seeking to show off missile delivery systems that are alarming the West which fears the technology could be used to deliver a nuclear warhead, Reuters reports.
The Defence Ministry announced the launch as world powers sought to agree a date and venue with Iran for resuming talks to resolve a standoff with the West over Tehran’s nuclear programme before it degenerates into a new Middle East war.

Efforts to nail down a new meeting have failed repeatedly and the powers fear Iran is exploiting the diplomatic vacuum to hone the means to produce nuclear weapons.
The Islamic Republic denies seeking weapons capability and says it seeks only electricity from its uranium enrichment so it can export more of its considerable oil wealth.

The powers have proposed new talks in February, a spokesman for the European Union’s foreign policy chief said on Monday, hours after Russia urged all concerned to “stop behaving like children” and commit to a meeting.
Iran earlier in the day denied media reports of a major explosion at one of its most sensitive, underground enrichment plants, describing them as Western propaganda designed to influence the nuclear talks.
The Defence Ministry said the space launch of the monkey coincided “with the days of” the Prophet Mohammad’s birthday, which was last week, but gave no date, according to a statement carried by the official news agency IRNA.
The launch was “another giant step” in space technology and biological research “which is the monopoly of a few countries”, the statement said.
The small grey monkey was pictured strapped into a padded seat and being loaded into the Kavoshgar rocket dubbed “Pishgam” (Pioneer) which on state media said reached a height of more than 120 km, IRNA said.
“This shipment returned safely to Earth with the anticipated speed along with the live organism,” Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told the semi-official Fars news agency. “The launch of Kavoshgar and its retrieval is the first step towards sending humans into space in the next phase.”
There was no independent confirmation of the launch.
The West worries that long-range ballistic technology used to propel Iranian satellites into orbit could be put to use delivering nuclear warheads.

Africa's first female billionaire' Angola president's daughter

Africa's first female billionaire is the daughter of Angolan president Jose Eduardo Dos Santos
The 40-year-old's investments in publicly traded companies in Portugal, including shares in a cable TV firm, as well her assets in at least one Angolan bank, "have pushed her net worth over the $1 billion mark," said the magazine, known for its annual rich lists.
Her first business endeavor was in 1997 when she opened a restaurant in Angola's capital, Luanda, according to the magazine. Since then, she's expanded her business interests to a number of industries, sitting on the boards of several Angolan and Portuguese companies.
A former Portuguese colony, Angola is the second largest oil producer in the continent. Over the last decade, the southwestern African country has emerged from the wreckage of a 27-year civil war to become one of the continent's major economic player

Facebook's mobile app dominated in 2012

According to the latest stats from comScore, Facebook was the most popular mobile app in the United States in 2012. The Google Maps app held the top position until October, when Apple rolled out its latest mobile operating system, iOS 6, and replaced the built-in Google Maps app with its own, less accurate version.

Of course, Facebook also had a hand in its own success. Its number of monthly unique visitors rose steadily over the course of the year. In August, the company rolled out a long overdue revamp of its iOS mobile app for iPhone and iPads, significantly speeding up the launch, scroll and browsing times. User reviews in Apple's App Store shot up as a result, and in December the company followed up with a better version of its Android app.
Facebook started 2012 facing criticisms of its mobile strategy, and while there are still lingering questions about how it will make money off of mobile, these stats show its adept at transferring the Facebook experience to tablets and smartphones.
People aren't just opening their Facebook app the most, they're spending astonishingly large chunks of time in the app, poking around and reading up on their friends. The social network's app was the single largest, single app time suck, accounting for 23% of the time people spend using mobile apps, according to comScore. Instagram was a distant second accounting for just 3% of the time people spend in apps. Google's app with the most engagement was Gmail, but in total 10% of users' time was spent across various Google apps.
The more interesting story in the coming year might be Google's rise to dominate all mobile platforms, not just its own Android operating system.
Facebook may have the No. 1 spot locked up, but Google apps account for the next five most popular apps. After Maps, Google Play, Google Search, Gmail and YouTube were the top apps on Android and iOS devices in December. Google only re-released an iOS version of its Maps app in December, which could continue to fight back and possibly overtake Facebook in 2013.
Apple's only app on the list is iTunes, coming in at 8th place. Rounding out the top 10 list are Pandora Radio, Cooliris and Yahoo! Messenger.

Hundreds killed in Brazil nightclub fire

The blaze at the Kiss nightclub in Santa Maria killed at least 233 people, Brazilian Health Minister Alexandro Padilha told reporters. Many of them apparently died from smoke inhalation, state-run Agencia Brasil reported. Others were trampled in the rush for the exits, one security guard told CNN affiliate Band News.
More than 90 people were hospitalized, Padilha said, including 14 patients with severe burns.
About 2,000 people were inside the club when the fire broke out -- double the maximum capacity of 1,000, said Guido de Melo, a state fire official.

Investigators have received preliminary information that security guards stopped people from exiting the club, he told Globo TV.
"This overcrowding made it difficult for people to leave, and according to the information we have, the security guards kept people from leaving the building," he said.
The fire started "from out of nowhere" on a stage at the club and quickly spread to the ceiling, witness Jairo Vieira told Band News.
"People started running," survivor Luana Santos Silva told Globo TV. "I fell on the floor."
There was a pyrotechnics show going on inside the club when the fire started. Authorities stopped short of blaming it for the blaze, saying the cause was still under investigation.
Video from the scene showed firefighters shooting streams of water at the club and shirtless men trying to break down a wall with axes.
Smoke billowed outside the front of the building as the stench of fire filled the air, said Max Muller, who was riding by on his motorbike when he saw the blaze.

Images of alleged next-gen iPhone components surface

A French blog posts images of what it says are speaker components for the next round of Apple smartphones, what it calls an iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.
Speaker components for next-generation iPhones

As we inch closer to the expected launch of much-rumored next-generation iPhones from Apple, images of alleged parts for them have materialized.
French blog Nowhereelse.fr, which has posted images of legitimate parts for unreleased iPhones in the past, has published images of what it says are speaker components for two future iPhone models. The images, supposedly snapped by someone employed by the company that manufactured the parts for Apple, are purportedly components for what the blog calls the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6.
The photographer allegedly told the blog that the first model would be released between March and July of this year and the second closer to the end of the year. It's worth noting that the target time frame for release of the first device, which wasn't identified, is a hefty five months.

In Swartz protest, Anon hacks U.S. site, threatens leaks

This is what the United States Sentencing Commission's hacked home page looked like.

In response to the death of tech activist Aaron Swartz, hacktivist collective Anonymous hacked a U.S. government Web site related to the justice system and posted a screed saying it would begin leaking a cache of government documents if the justice system is not reformed.
The group hacked the Web site for the United States Sentencing Commission late Friday, posting a message about what it's calling "Operation Last Resort," along with a set of downloadable encrypted files it said contain sensitive information. The sentencing commission is the caretaker of the guidelines for sentencing in U.S. federal courts.
"Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed," the group's statement reads. "Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play."
The recent suicide of Swartz, a proponent of freely accessible information, has been blamed by some on what they say were outrageously aggressive efforts on the part of the U.S. Attorney in Massachusetts to punish Swartz for his alleged theft of millions of articles from a database of academic journals. The 26-year-old Swartz, who struggled with bouts of depression, had been charged with 13 felonies and threatened with decades in prison and fines exceeding $1 million. U.S. Attorney Carmin Ortiz says Swartz's lawyers were also offered a plea bargain in which he'd plead guilty and serve perhaps six months.
Anonymous encouraged its followers to download the files on the hacked site, a set of nine downloads named after the U.S. Supreme Court's nine justices and collectively referred to by the hacking collective as a "warhead."
"Warhead-US-DOJ-LEA-2013.AEE256 is primed and armed. It has been quietly distributed to numerous mirrors over the last few days and is available for download from this website now. We encourage all Anonymous to syndicate this file as widely as possible."
The group wouldn't specify what, exactly, is in the files, saying only that "the contents are various and we won't ruin the speculation by revealing them. Suffice it to say, everyone has secrets, and some things are not meant to be public. At a regular interval commencing today, we will choose one media outlet and supply them with heavily redacted partial contents of the file."
The contents of the encrypted files can apparently be accessed only with a decryption key, and Anonymous said it didn't necessarily want to provide that key to its followers -- it mentioned "collateral damage" as a result of any leaks and said: "It is our hope that this warhead need never be detonated." But the group said the U.S. government must begin acting on reforms to the justice system suggested by the system's critics, and in spelling out its demands more specifically, it mentioned plea bargaining and suggested the overhaul of legislation such as the mid-1980s antihacking law titled the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Eating your own, Microsoft style

Eat your own, or somebody else will. That's the new mantra in the device world.
Here's what Apple said this week on that topic.
In terms of cannibalization and how we think about this, I see cannibalization as a huge opportunity for us. One, our base philosophy is to never fear cannibalization. If we do, somebody else will just cannibalize it and so we never fear it. --Tim Cook.
This was said in response to an analyst's question during the company's first-quarter earnings conference call. Earlier in the call, Apple, in its prepared remarks, said that it sold 4.1 million Macs in the quarter, more than a million less than the 5.2 million sold a year ago in the same period.
But iPad sales appear to be more than compensating: 22.9 million iPads were sold during the quarter compared with 15.4 million in the year-ago quarter.
So, how are PCs faring in comparison? Worldwide PC shipments totaled 89.8 million units in Q4, about 6 million less than the 95.9 million shipped in the same period last year, according to IDC.
Problem is, the PC industry doesn't have -- and didn't have for years -- something like the iPad to cannibalize (a word I use loosely, as its original meaning has been hijacked by analysts) old-school designs, so there is no net gain. It does now have Microsoft, though.
Microsoft (now a PC maker, by the way) isn't so much cannibalizing as trying to eat its customer's lunch. All in a very controlled, civilized way, of course. (And very necessarily, many would argue.)
Here's what Microsoft said this week during the company's earnings conference call about the Surface tablet (via Seeking Alpha).
With the broadening of the Surface lineup, we will continue to highlight the power of Windows 8 tightly integrated with fantastic hardware. --Peter Klein, chief financial officer
Translation: more Surface stuff on the way. More nibbling on partners' blue plate specials.
Meanwhile, Windows 8 PC purveyors are desperately trying to replace traditional PCs with designs that don't exactly cannibalize but straddle the old and new. Acer (which isn't fond of Microsoft the PC maker) has, for example, the Aspire S7, which is arguably one of the top, aesthetically speaking, Windows 8 touch-screen laptops out there right now. And it now has a pair of Windows 8 Iconia tablets that become laptops when attached to dedicated docks.

ABOUT THE AMERICAN AIRFORCE ONE

1."Air Force One" isn't technically a plane: It's simply the radio call name for any U.S. Air Force plane carrying the president of the United States. As soon as the president steps aboard an Air Force plane, that plane is referred to as Air Force One by the crew and all air traffic controllers, in order to avoid confusion with any other planes in the area. If the president rides on an Army aircraft, that aircraft is Army One, and whenever he boards his specialized helicopter, that craft is Marine One. Civilians generally refer to the physical plane itself as Air Force One

2.Today, there are actually two customized Boeing 747-200B jets that regularly fly under this designation. They are nearly identical and are almost as tall as a six story building, and as long as a city block.

3.Air Force One is one of the most recognizable symbols of the presidency. Emblazoned with the words "United States of America," the American flag, and the Seal of the President of the United States, it is an undeniable presence wherever it flies

4.Air Force One has unlimited range and can carry the President wherever he needs to travel. The onboard electronics are hardened to protect against an electromagnetic pulse, and Air Force One is equipped with advanced secure communications equipment, allowing the aircraft to function as a mobile command center in the event of an attack on the United States. The media refer to it as “The flying Oval Office” or the “ The flying White House”. On September 11th, 2001, the president's plane showed that it was much more than an executive jet -- it became a mobile bunker when all ground positions seemed vulnerable to attack

5.Airforce One has four General Electric CF6-80C2B1 jet engines, which provide 56,700 pounds of thrust a piece. The top speed is between 630 and 700 miles (about 1,126km) per hour and the ceiling maximum (i.e how high the plane can fly) is 45,100 feet (commercial 747s fly at about 30,000 feet)

6.The plane carries 53,611 gallons (about 203,000 litres) of fuel and weighs 833,000 pounds (about 377,000 kg) fully loaded for a long-range mission. With a full tank, the plane can fly half way around the world. The plane has mid-ir refueling capability. As with the B-2 and other combat craft, in-flight refueling gives Air Force One the ability to stay up in the air indefinitely, which could be crucial in an emergency situation
7.Inside, the President and his travel companions enjoy 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, including an extensive suite for the President that features a large office, lavatory, and conference room. The president has onboard living quarters, with his own bedroom, bathroom, workout room/gym and office space. Air Force One also includes a medical suite that can function as an operating room, and a doctor is permanently on board. The plane’s two food preparation galleys can feed 100 people at a time

8.Air Force One also has quarters for those who accompany the President, including senior advisors, Secret Service officers, traveling press, and other guests. Several cargo planes typically fly ahead of Air Force One to provide the President with services needed in remote locations

9.The two planes are military aircraft, designed to withstand an air attack. Among other things, the plane is outfitted with electronic counter measures (ECM) to jam enemy radar. The plane can also eject flares to throw heat-seeking missiles off course.

10.The plane is completely off limits to Many. Even visiting politicians and journalists aren't allowed in some parts of the plane, and the Air Force is careful to conceal specific details of the craft's layout including its advanced avionics and defenses

11.One of the most remarkable feature on the plane is its extensive electronics. It has 85 onboard telephones, a collection of two-way radios, fax machines and computer connections. It also has 19 televisions and assorted office equipment. The phone system is set up for normal air to ground connections and secure lines. The president and his staff can reach just about anybody in the world while cruising tens of thousands of feet in the air. The onboard electronics include about 238 miles of wiring (twice the amount you'd find in a normal 747). Heavy shielding is tough enough to protect the wiring and crucial electronics from the electromagnetic pulse associated with a nuclear blast

12.Air Force one is a military aircraft, designed to withstand an air attack. Among other things, the plane is outfitted with electronic counter measures (ECM) to jam enemy radar. The plane can also eject flares to throw heat-seeking missiles off course. Some of the most interesting parts of the plane -- its advanced avionics and defenses -- are classified

13.Every Air Force One flight is classified as a military operation, and it is handled as such. Air Force crews at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland carefully inspect the plane, and the runway, before every flight. When it's time to head off, the Marine One helicopter brings the president from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base. Teams all over the base keep an eye out for any unauthorized craft in the area and are authorized to shoot on sight. In advance of every Air Force One flight, the Air Force crew sends C141 Starlifter cargo carrier planes, toting the president's motorcade, to the destination. This collection of bulletproof limousines and vans, loaded with weaponry, keeps the president safe on the ground.

14.Air Force One can comfortably carry 70 passengers and 26 crew members . These crew members are carefully screened military personnel, with exemplary service histories. Even the crew members who prepare meals must operate with a high level of security. For example, when buying food, they must hit the stores undercover, and they must select markets at random, in order to protect the president from a poison attack. Onboard the plane, the crew provides 24-hour first class service.

15.Most presidents form close connections with their flight crew, and the final Air Force One flight is always an emotional trip.

Man stabs ex-girl friend to death for dumping him

The Aleato family has been thrown into sorrow following the murder of their 26-year-old daughter, Onyinyechukwu, last Saturday by her ex-boyfriend in Lagos.
The deceased, a sales girl at Alaba International market, Ojo, was reportedly trailed by her ex-boyfriend, Osita Amanunwa from her Iba new site abode, to Ajangbadi area of Lagos, where she had gone to visit a friend.
Crime Alert gathered that the late Onyin, as she was fondly called, sat outside her host’s compound, exchanging banters, without the slightest inkling that death lurked at the corner.
Eye witnesses said she turned and suddenly, the smile on her face disappeared. And  when her  host turned to the direction of her gaze, they discovered  that her ex stood  opposite them.
Her host  who spoke on condition of anonymity, told crime Alert that: “ she greeted him but he hissed and walked away. He later came back and beckoned on her to come. She excused herself and left…”.

Singular response

He paused at this juncture, quivering with fear. That singular response happened to be Onyin’s greatest undoing because unknown to her,  Osita had a sinister motive up his sleeves.
This was confirmed moments later, following a desperate  shout for help from the isolated meeting point at number 4/5 Abike Ogunlana close, at about 9pm.  At first, no one suspected it could be Onyin.

But after waiting for a while, her host decided to check on her, only to see Onyin in the pool of her own blood with a knife still thrust in her neck. From all indication, it was obvious that she tried to put up a struggle  in order to free herself from the assailant’s grip.

She was also discovered to have managed to crawl from the isolated spot to an open area. But her strength apparently failed her midway, owing to   much loss of blood. Unable to crawl further, she  stopped,  clutching firmly to the earth as if rescue  would spring out of it. Osita on the other hand, was nowhere to be found.

Cause of break-up
Crime Alert  gathered that before the incident, Osita, a trader at Alaba International market, had on several occasions, threatened to leave an indelible mark on Onyin for dumping him for another man. Investigation revealed that the duo had a romantic relationship that lasted  for six years, a relationship that was to lead to marriage until Osita allegedly raped Onyin’s younger sister.

Family sources told Crime Alert that Oyin’s younger sister(names withheld) was sent to deliver a parcel to Osita at his 80 Isiaka street, Iba new site  two years ago. However, on reaching his apartment  he allegedly raped the teenager who was barely 15 years-old.
It was gathered that the teenager never told anyone about the deed, until she was discovered to be pregnant. She gave birth about a year ago.

Without further warning or advice,  Onyinyechukwu, stopped seeing Osita. But her action as gathered, signaled the danger that eventually led to her sudden death, following threat from Osita.
Perhaps, had she listened to her parents, this tragedy might not have befallen her. It was gathered  that right from the onset, Onyin’s parents kicked against her relationship with 36-year-old Osita who hails from Akere village in Ogbaru local government area of Anambra state.

Her devastated father, Mr Aleato, offered an explanation to the family’s stance: “ My daughter came back home one fateful day with razor  marks all over her body and when I asked what happened, she told me that she fell down. But we were later  informed by a friend of hers that her  boyfriend, Osita, inflicted the marks on her. I warned her  severally to abstain from Osita and every other man who would go to the extent of inflicting such injury on her; men who would not respect her as a woman…”

It was also gathered that Osita had on several occasions beat Onyin publicly, for calling off the relationship , only to start off with another man, boasting that if he could not have her, nobody else would.

Police on the trail of the  assailant
Since the tragic incident, Osita’s whereabouts is unknown. Policemen at Ilemba Hausa  were however,  said to be on his trail. When Crime Alert visited his apartment at Iba new site, it was discovered that Osita had a wife already. Sources hinted that he rushed home that fateful night and informed some of his friends around the area about what he had done and thereafter, picked some of his clothes before disappearing into thin air. Out of fear, his close friends were also discovered to have fled, apparently to avoid being arrested by the Police.

The case, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) where operatives at the Homicide section have reportedly began investigation.

This is really terrible.

Main One boss tasks govt on broadband provision

From all indications, broadband could lead ICT economy in 2013. Being arguably the second mainstay of the economy after oil, improvement in the ICT economy will surely impact positively on the  economy.
This could possibly be why broadband cable company, mainone believes that the government will gain a lot if it broadens the policies that would guide broadband penetration and also open up the landscapes a bit, more active private participation would be attracted.
Taking stock ,recently, of its operations in 2012 cum activities since three years of existence, the company noted that major activities that highlighted broadband as economy booster and attracted government attention has been initiated by private investors including its visionary investment in landing submarine broadband cable from Portugal to the shores of Lagos Nigeria, Accra Ghana and other Africa countries.
Recounting its participation since that time, MainOne’s CEO, Ms Funke Opeke said that, “MainOne has actually had an impact and made significant contribution to the broadband access in the country although we have not done as much as we would have liked, due to some challenges.

We are still facing the issue of last mile deployment to enable people have ubiquitous access. We have boosted the broadband lives of people in Abuja, Portharcourt and Lagos even at great cost. Our vision is to see that at least the schools, health sector and even all the local governments in the country are wired and connected for best broadband experience.
”We will continue to drum the importance of development of road and access for a better economy” she added
Opeke also revealed that while her company was expecting that the government would make policy statement that can help, it was also doing other things from behind to help.
Data centre
“We are planning a better data centre that can back up banks, media houses and others into archiving important information and data storage that can help make the nation a global nation.
The data centre is physical. What we are trying to do is adopt a model that can hold very sensitive data that we already have and those we are also going to have. We are planning tier three, tier four data centre that can hold its own in the world. It will be located in Lagos and we are intending to complete it in 2013 and it becomes fully operational in 2014. The capacity is estimated to hold at least 600 racks and after that the second one which will also hold up to another 600 racks.
Advocacy
”We are looking at both regulatory and legislative interventions before the benefit of broadband would trickle down to the remotest parts of the country. We are engaging both the regulator and the National Assembly. We are asking the government to open up the landscape in order not to make carrying service to the ultimate consumer so costly. Right now, we are moving into Warri and other places but it costs us a lot, to extend services to these places. If we get the government to open up the landscape more, we may be able to do more
Resolution of right of way
Right of way is a major issue. The government has intervened but it is still a work in progress as far as we know. The ministry of communications technology is working to ensure that the states and local governments adopt the same proposals made.
Let there be infrastructure sharing policy that the government can put up in less than 60 days to quicken things. The problem is that we look a lot at policy frameworks and researches and papers without doing anything actually.

Etisalat Nigeria hits 15m subscriber base

ETISALAT Nigeria, Tuesday, announced that it has hit 15 million subscribers base at the start of business this year 2013. This achievement, according to Etisalat, represents a market share of over 15 percent in just over four years of operations.
Mr Steve Evans, CEO, Etisalat Nigeria
By that standard, the telecom company considers itself one of the most successful late entrant telecom companies globally.
Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Steven Evans said: “at the beginning of 2012, we were moving towards 11 million subscribers. Now, 12 months later we have added four million active subscribers to our base, this is a phenomenal achievement.
“We have shown an innate ability to turn challenges into opportunities. With this mindset and our focus on quality, innovation and the customer, we have been able to listen, attract, reward, retain and expand our customer base over the last 12 months.”

ITAN boss seeks special fund for ICT sector In Nigeria

While commending Bank of Industry for its single digit interest rate for the ICT sector, the Information Technology Association of Nigeria, (ITAN) has called on the Federal Government to set aside fund for the ICT sector so as to encourage growth of small local ICT companies in the challenging market environment
President of ITAN, Engr. Florence Seriki stated this recently while taking stock of Omatek Ventures and the road map for 2013 noted that the fund would serve as a bail out for the ICT sector battling with foreign vendors.

Seriki who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Omatek Ventures PLC said that by lending funds to SMEs in the industry at a single digit lending rate, the bank would have helped the growth of the industry.
“We have approached Bank of Industry to explain the state of the industry and BOI created a desk for the ICT industry and will fund any player that is interested at a single digit or at most 10 per cent interest rate. BOI gives concession to ITAN members on funding.
“The Nigerian ICT industry needs a special fund. There is urgent need to patronize local ICT products. That will go a long way in creating jobs across the nation. The Students PC Ownership Scheme introduced last year by the Ministry of Communications Technology is a good one. We are ready to partner with the government on that. We have the capacity for Students PCs ownership Scheme. We have a functional conveyor here. Anything can go on the conveyor. It is important that the government encourages local production if the country must survive the knowledge economy,” the Omatek boss said.
According to her, apart from funding, one of the major challenges is increase in volume. “That is why we create resource centres in the Nigerian universities. Some of the students have not used computers. Government should see ICT as the major driver of the economy. It has worked in China, Taiwan, India and other countries of the world. We have many products for the students,” Seriki said.

FG orders return of toxic wastes containers to U.K

Lagos – The Federal Government has ordered that the toxic waste laden containers on board MV Marivia Monrovia be shipped back to the port of origin in the U.K. Dr Ngeri Benebo, the Director General of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), disclosed to reporters on Thursday.
The Liberian flagged container ship with gross tonnage of 23, 652, which berthed at the Tin-Can Island Port on Wednesday, was intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service and NESREA. Some containers in the ship were laden with used television sets, used computers, used CPUs, used DVDs, used microwaves, used pressing irons and used stereo sets.
Benebo said that sending the consignment back to the port of origin was in conformity with the provisions of Harmful Wastes Act, promulgated after the Koko waste saga. “We are sending the e-wastes back to the port of origin,’’the DG said.

Dr Benebo said
that the agency was going to work according to Nigerian laws on the matter, adding that the agency would do exactly what the laws said. The director general promised that the vessel owners would be heavily sanctioned in line with the laws of the land. “The captain wanted to deceive Nigerians.
“When he realised that there was a red alert on the containers, he lied that the containers were not destined for Nigeria and that they were meant for another country, which was completely false. “ I conferred with the Comptroller General of Customs, who said that once it is manifested as Nigeria, the containers must be dropped and inspected in Nigeria,’’
Inspection of the containers, as directed by the comptroller-general, was carried out by officials of the NPA, NIMASA, the Customs Service and other security agencies. Benebo said that it was discovered that the containers were meant to be disposed off in Nigeria. According to her, Nigeria will never be used as a dumping ground and “we will resist any attempt by any country to make Nigeria dumping ground”.
Benebo said that agency acted on a tip off to track down the toxic contents in the ship. The names of the importers are Messrs Moronuk David and Bonik Investment. NAN reports that this is not the first attempt to dump toxic wastes in Nigeria.
The first attempt was in 1988 when a shipment of over 3,500 tonnes of toxic wastes from Italy was imported to Koko Port, a coastal community in the old Bendel State. In April 2010, the NCS arrested and detained a Maersk Line vessel, MV Nashiville, laden with toxic wastes (lead batteries classified as Basel code A1180 and broken televisions.
In June 2010, NCS also arrested and detained a ship, Mv Gumel, in Lagos port for bringing eight containers with materials suspected to be toxic wastes. Also, in October 2010, a vessel, MV Vera D, carrying three containers laden with toxic black and white television sets, was detained at the Tin-Can Port, Lagos. The toxic-laden containers were sent back to the port of origin in the U.S. In Dec. 2012, NESREA impounded four containers of used electronics described as “e-wastes” in Apapa port. (NAN)
