ABSTRACT
This research was carried out to examine the Effect of Child Abuse on the Academic Performance of Pupils in Secondary School in Isoko South local Government Area of Delta State Nigeria. The focus of this study on street hawking, child prostitution, child labour and child maltreatment as an aspect of child abuse. The goal of the research on child abuse and academic performance of children who participate in its as a routine. Scholars and people have defined child abuse or child labour in several ways. In a nutshell, it is the exploitation of children, premature assumption of adult roles on the part of children, working long hours for low wages. The questionnaire was the instrument of data collection, administered to (5) five secondary school selected in the five local government areas: A hypothesis that “there is no significant relationship
between child maltreatment and academic performance”. The data were collected by means of questionnaire which were distributed to one hundred and twenty students (120) or respondents in the five (5) selected schools. The data was tested and interpreted in simple percentage and analysis using the chi-square method. Finally it is recommended that the governments should intensify efforts towards eradicating of poverty and the populace, so as to enable parents have enough capital to provide for their children. Also single parenthood should be discouraged as it exposed children to all kinds of maltreatment.
