CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study
In the ancient society of Nigeria, informal education was in vogue. However, with the coming of the missionaries formal education was introduced, schools were built, boys and girls learnt together and were taught to acquire skills that would make them fit into the challenges of the complex society as well as reading and writing. (Anyakoha, 2002). As a result of this system of education and complexity of the society at large, sexual abuse of female children came into existence with an epidemic of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDS) such HIV virus, Aids, Gonorrhea, Staphylococcus, Syphilis to mention but a few. There are other unpleasant consequences like teenage pregnancy, early marriage, abortion, impaired health, impaired fertility for life which have led millions to lose their lives as a result of ignorance in the society. Therefore, to solve this multiple complex problem, there is the need for awareness campaigns by introducing sex education in schools.
The teaching of sex education in schools is imperative for teachers, guardians and parents to educate children, male and female alike on the dangers of sexual behaviour or activities. However, if an adolescent boy impregnates an adolescent girl, the boy is not free. If he has no strong parental background, by the time the girls parents bundle him and her baby to him, he may drop out of school. Sexual identity disorder is a situation where teenage boys stimulate girls dressing in its entirety and characteristics. It is a big distraction from normal academic pursuit. With the introduction of sex education, most female children who believe that sex occupation is the shortest way to riches will now be enlightened on its dangers and consequences and would therefore desist from it.
Adolescence is a unique and delicate period in the life of every individual, it is a period of male – female relationship and if one is not careful, they may face many terrible and unfavourable consequences. This as a matter of fact has prompted this study to find out how these numerous problems could be combined with academic pursuit to achieve excellency in the field of education. These problems associated with sex that individuals suffer are due to inadequate information about sex activities. Oviogbodu (2008).
Rerch (1936) defines sex education as a broad term used to describe education about human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, reproductive health, emotions, reproductive rights and responsibilities, abstinence, contraception and other aspects of human sexual behaviour. Now that the need for sex education is loud and clear, many people still oppose its formal introduction in schools. This I would say, is borne out of ignorance, these opponents feel that teaching the child about sex activities would expose the child all the more, it would lead to sexual indulgence. Some feel that those who would be in charge of leading sex education may not be morally upright to do the job. Once again, this study is going to look into the relationship between sex education and students academic achievement in Christ the King College Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
1.2. Statement of the Problem
The problems that have risen from inadequate information about sex activities and sex education among youths and adolescents cannot be over-emphasized. These problems include school drop-outs, teenage pregnancies, abortions, death, impaired fertility for life venereal diseases, emotional maladjustments, early marriage and many more printed materials like magazines, novels, exposure to pornography in the internet and movies have contributed immensely to these problems. How to eradicate or reduce the above incidences for improvement in academic achievement of students becomes a problem for investigation in this study.
1.3. Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to determine the importance of sex education among secondary school students in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. Specifically this study intends to:
(a) Find out if introduction of sex education could enhance students’ academic achievements in secondary schools.
(b) To find out if sexual behaviour or activities exhibited by students could affect academic performance.

(e) To suggest some remedial solutions to the problems of sex towards academic achievement.
1.4. Research Questions
Based on the above, the following research questions were tested:

(b) Would there be any significant difference between rural and urban school students in their assessment of the importance of sex education among secondary school students in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State?
