Digital literacy critical to successful broadband penetration

broadband-cable
Former Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe has said that digital literacy is a necessary ingredient for successful deployment of broadband services in Nigeria.

He stated this while delivering a speech at the Mobile West Africa conference held in Lagos last week.

He said broadband is an essential and critical digital infrastructure and that digital literacy and appreciation of value of broadband is important to drive value from its penetration in Nigeria.

According to him, “10 percent increase in broadband penetration yields 1.13 percent to the gross domestic product. So, it is important to stimulate demand and improve access to devices that are smart. This is because it will be disastrous if after deploying the broadband and people are deploying it for services only.”

Speaking on ‘Driving universal broadband access in Nigeria to usher in the next wave of telecommunication revolution’ he said broadband services plays essential role in today’s global economy and that despite progress made with voice services, it will be impossible for Nigeria to advance economically without deepening its broadband penetration.

“Broadband is the main thing in the world today. We can be happy with how much we have done with voice services so far, but the truth is that without adequate supply of broadband services, it will be difficult for Nigeria to claim to be an advanced country and that is what we are aiming to be.

“I was actually in the committee drafted by the president to draft the national broadband plan. That has been done and we set some target for the country for us to achieve a certain landmark in the next five years. Currently, the broadband penetration hovers between six and eight percent in terms of people who actually have access but we are hoping that in the next five years, this will go up to 40 percent. And I think there is a chance of even getting it higher than that if the regulatory institutions and other stakeholders do their bits including the private operators,” he said.

He further explained that, “There is a lot of demand for broadband service. This is because, when you look at the population of Nigeria, you will realize that it is made up of a lot of young people. We have over 70 percent of young people in this country.

Airtel seals partnership deal with Apple on iPhone 5s

One of the leading telecommunications services providers in Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, has sealed a strategic partnership with leading mobile phone maker, Apple, to officially unveil the iPhone 5s in Nigeria.

With this development, Airtel becomes the first mobile telecommunications services provider in Nigeria to officially seal a partnership deal with Apple.

The partnership is expected to offer telecoms consumers across the country an opportunity to purchase the iPhones in Airtel showrooms nationwide or from the outlets of its channel/retail partners including Slot.

Speaking during an event to unveil the iPhone 5s in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Airtel Nigeria, Segun Ogunsanya, described the company’s partnership with Apple as the coming together of two great brands, saying the partnership is a demonstration of Apple’s trust in Airtel and indeed in Nigeria.

He added that the partnership underscores Airtel’s unwavering commitment to its vision of becoming Nigeria’s number 1 mobile Internet service provider.

“At Airtel Nigeria, we believe that the future of mobile telephony is mobile Internet and so we are repositioning to revolutionize this landscape with innovative value offerings and strategic partnerships.

“Our partnership with Apple is a glowing testimony to our desire to lead with Internet. Our enviable track record also provides us a leverage to empower more Nigerians to enjoy super-fast Internet services on their devices and mobile phones on the Airtel network,” he said.

He noted that Airtel is currently embarking on a wide-scale expansion, modernization and transformation of its network.

“Our goal is to ensure that telecoms consumers enjoy the best experience on VOICE, VISUAL and VIDEO as they engage and connect with friends and family members as well as transact their businesses on the Airtel network,” he said.

The iPhone 5s is described by telecoms pundits as the most forward-thinking smartphone in the world. iPhone 5s sets a precedent, with an amazing amount of technology in a remarkably thin, light design.

It builds on that achievement with Touch ID — a fingerprint identity sensor. An A7 chip with 64-bit architecture. An even more impressive iSight camera. And ultrafast LTE wireless.

THE IMPORTANCE OF INTERNET ACCESS INTO THE GROWTH OF NIGERIAN ECONOMY

The provision of infrastructure that provides stable and reliable internet access is a very important element that must be addressed if Africa is to quicken the pace of economic development and ensure that citizens are enabled to compete with the rest of the world, Chief Executive Officer of Phase3 Telecom, Mr. Stanley Jegede has said.

Jegede, while speaking about his firm’s participation at Cyber Nigeria Forum and Innovation Awards recently said that the investment of millions of dollars in network development across Nigeria and other African countries is based on the belief that Africa had a lot of untapped potential

“At Phase3 Telecom, we have, for long, believed that developing the right communications infrastructure in Africa is what will open up the continent’s economic potential and make its citizens globally competitive. That is what informed our decision to build a regional optic fibre network using the best technologies available in the industry.

“Today, we are ready to take our network to other regions not yet reached by high-capacity transmission network to provide the best communications experience to people in the continent,” he said.

Jegede said further that Nigeria already has a good foundation for effective communications and promised that Phase3 Telecommunications will continue to offer solutions that meet the needs of businesses, organisations and individuals.

ANDROID DATA PLANS

After BBM was lunched on android phones, the demand for android phones increased thereby bringing demand for blackberry very low. with just N14,000 one can get him/herself an android phone with BBM, Whatsapp, Facebook, high definition games, Email to mention but a few compared to blackberry. As at the time BBM was lunched on Android Phone, the cost of the lowest blackberry is not less that N20,000 and don't ask me how much Bold 5 is being sold now. lolz

But there is a problem, Guys have not been able to enjoy their device to the fullest because of the high cost of internet subscription from the network providers. 50 percent of the features that come with android phones are not been utilized.

There seem to be privilege that blackberry users enjoy over android phones. this is what i call intimidation. imagine the idiosyncrasy. with 1000, a blackberry user will surf the net with an unlimited download but not possible with Android user.

Thanks to Airtel that still allow their BIS to run on other device. one might think that they are stupid, i tell you there are not. Show me an android user that doesn't have Airtel SIM, for them, Airtel is sure of their 1500 every month not to be shared with any other network. lolz.

But how long will this keep happening?, How long are we going to wait before the network providers bring data bundle package like BIS for android users.

Believe me in no distant time, that will be made possible but for the main time, I bring to you some of the packages that is favorable enough.

Option 1
with MTN night plan N2500, you will be offered 4.5G of internet access with which 1.5G will run for day and night until you exhaust it. Thereafter the remaining 3G will be for night only 9pm to 6am.

Option II
with Glo N1000 month plan, you will be given 350MB to manage. better than non brother.

Option III
You can go for Airtel BIS month plan. where you will be given 1.5G to browse with.
N/B Only Airtel BIS can run on any device and the month plan for 1.5G cost N1500 as at the time of this publication.
