Today's Teenagers: How to Handle or Teach Sex Education and who should Teach it

Many parents and even professionals see the young teenagers as having a greater tendency of anti-social behaviour and promiscuity. The real increase in teenage sexual behaviour over the last decades is not only in the area of sexual intercourse but in the area of petty behaviour types that have worked out by teenagers themselves. A comprehensive understanding of teenagers requires knowledge of youths consciousness, or the personal factor aspiration, attitudes, beliefs that enable young people to sustain intimate and lasting social relationships.

The transition from elementary to secondary school which happen to coincide with the beginning of rapid growth is used by many researchers to mark the end of childhood and beginning of adolescence (Grunder, 1978), it is very clear that adolescents activity need education but the issue is that who or from whom should they acquire this information should it be from their peers, parents, teachers, magazines, novels, the media movies or church.
As a matter of fact, peer groups, novels, magazines and the media or have been able to contribute to the transmission of sex education but how informed are they? They only succeed in passing wrong information and not what the adolescent really need to know.
Oni Olisola (1995), suggested that parents should start at an early age to give the children sex education preferably as from three (3) years old. This is to avoid distraction from their academic work since most children get their direction and sense of sexuality from peers and media. Most parents go to work, market or business place and return late to the phone, the consequences of this is that, parents do not have enough time for their children and unfortunately, most children enter secondary school without informal sex guidance from home.
However, whether children are exposed to sex education or not, the fact still remains that young people are going to learn about sex. Therefore it is beneficial for them to learn about sex in a correct and dignified manner than from magazines, friends, peer groups or from dirty-minded adults.
