Ex-Apple CEO reportedly mulling bid to rescue BlackBerry

We've seen a steady stream of potential suitors for BlackBerry in recent months, but unnamed sources are now claiming ex-Apple CEO John Sculley is looking into taking control of the company. The Globe and Mail reports that Sculley, who famously helped oust Steve Jobs from Apple in the '80s, working with partners in "exploring a joint bid" for the troubled Canadian smartphone maker.

Although he refused to confirm or deny the rumor, Sculley has long been a fan of the company. Speaking to the Globe and Mail, Sculley says "there's a lot of future value in Blackberry," but "without experienced people who have run this type of business, and without a strategic plan, it would be really challenging."

Other companies reportedly interested in BlackBerry include Lenovo, Cisco, Google, and the company's founders. The only confirmed bid so far came from insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings, which offered $4.7 billion. Although Fairfax's bid was for the entire company, BlackBerry isn't against splitting up its various divisions to ensure its recovery. While its smartphone sales have slumped in recent years, the manufacturer's enterprise operations have fared better, and would likely appeal to a broader range of companies.

BlackBerry has announced that BlackBerry Messenger will be released today for Android and iOS. The company originally planned to release its messaging app late last month, but those plans were abruptly pushed back when an early version of the Android app publicly leaked ahead of schedule. The company says that "about 1 million" Android users were using the unreleased version of BBM for Android, and BlackBerry is also claiming that more than 1 million iOS users managed to "side load" the app onto iPhone. "In the next few hours, people will start seeing BBM in Google Play, the App Store and in select Samsung App Stores," the company says.

But unfortunately it appears that BlackBerry is still very much concerned about an initial surge of users. It's implementing a registration wait list; upon opening the app, you'll have to enter an email address to reserve your spot. Anyone that signed up for information about the mobile apps at BBM.com won't have to wait, but new signups will have to deal with the virtual queue. Despite being despised by users, the wait list has become an increasingly popular tactic among startups. Still, it strikes us as odd to see BlackBerry using the strategy. "We are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible," BlackBerry says. The company will be providing updates on "how quickly the line is moving" via its Twitter account. BlackBerry first announced that its BBM client would be going multi-platform in May.

BBM for Android and iPhone hits 10m download mark

 BlackBerry rolled out the official BBM app for Android and iOS after numerous delays, and the firm has netted 10 million downloads in the first 24 hours.

BBM is available as a free download in the Google Play market, Apple App Store and select Samsung App Stores. However, due to high demand for the app BlackBerry has been limiting access.

Users who signed up at BBM.com, will get a headstart and should be able to use BBM on their Android or iOS device immediately. Those who didn't sign up will have to register and wait for an email before they can activate the app.

Despite the delay, uptake of BBM has proved incredibly popular, with the @BBM confirming the ten million user mark had been surpassed.

The software was originally expected to debut on Android and iPhone devices on 21 and 22 September, respectively. However,this was scrapped after an incomplete version of BBM for Android appeared online hours before its official launch.

This unofficial app was downloaded by more than 1.1 million people during its first eight hours of availability.

The company has also revealed that around three million people have registered to be notified exactly when the app will be available.

In a statement, BlackBerry said it was heartened by the initial response to the release, despite the issues it has caused.
As a result, it confirmed that the worldwide rollout of the software for both iPhone and Android users has now been put on hold.

"Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit www.BBM.com to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability," the statement continued.

"As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country rollout of BBM for Android and continue the rollout of BBM for iPhone," it concluded.

In a follow up statement, Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry, shed some further light on the technical issues caused by the unofficial, older release.

"This older version resulted in volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal for each active user and impacted the system in abnormal ways," he explained.

"The version we were planning to release on Saturday addressed these issues, however we could not block users of the unreleased version if we went ahead with the launch."

As a result, the software is unlikely to see the light of day this week, as his team works to get the unreleased version taken out of circulation.

"We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it’s not. This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week," he added.

However, as reported by IT Pro, BBM could be set to make its debut on iPhone and Android devices sooner rather than later, with the firm's CMO claiming the reworked software will be released "within days".

"Whoever is interested in BlackBerry understands the company has world class products and services. These are products and services that customers can continue to count on," he said.

The article also states that, as of Tuesday 15 October, six million users had already pre-registered for both versions of BBM.

Reports had previously suggested that BlackBerry was gunning for a summer launch, for both Apple and Android, but this failed to materialise.

Suggested Possible Solution to Examination Misconduct

In eradication of examination misconduct, Sogbetan (2006) suggested some reasonable solutions that are as follows: He explained that morality should be taught in schools to the missionaries because morality goes with religious feeling. He also went further to explain that examination bodies should make sure that competent and reliable hands are allowed to investigate in examination and should hold any principal, proprietors and invigilators of a school responsible for elected and reported mass examination misconduct at their centre. They should also make sure that question papers tally with number of candidates at each centre and if any extra, it should not be more than five that should be kept with the invigilator. And also anybody involved in the administration of an external examination should be well remunerated so as to act as a check against the temptation of accepting money from candidates. The misconduct of examination has mainly contributed to the overall deterioration of the standard of education in our communities. The misconducts are commonly committed by examination at the pre-conduct and evaluation stages. Different agents are involved and cause examination misconduct:

Akpotu (2004) was of the opinion that every examination has rules and regulations guiding the examinees and examiners which must be adhered to religiously.

    A major and terrifying educational crisis that is persistently and steadily threatening the Nigerian educational system is examination misconduct. The situation in institutions of learning at all levels has been deteriorating at such an alarming rate that many crises attribute it to the falling standard of education (Ibanga, 1982, Abdulahi 1982 & Olorundare, 1993), that teachers in institutions of learning have expressed dismay over the rate of poor academic performance of students in schools (Akpan, 1992, Ekwo, 1996 & Neuty, 2001). The concept of examination misconduct has gradually become a household phenomenon at all levels of our educational institutions. To direct the study, three research questions were stated. The study adopted the survey research design and the population of the study comprised all public and private secondary school students in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

Most bloggers have one thing in mind before they began to blog: To make quick money online. While this is not going to happen to most of you out there for reasons I am going to discuss in this article, there is still hope of making it right and earning good money from your blog.

Most of you must have realized that making money with your blog is not as easy as you thought, I see most bloggers encouraging others to start blogging even when they have never earned their first pay check themselves. Recently in a forum, someone asked me why he is not making money with his blog, and my answer was simple – because you don’t know how to.

Reasons for not making money with your blog

If you’re still struggling to make money with your blog, some, or all, the reasons outlined below apply to you:

Your blog sucks!

Allow me to share some harsh realities why you are not making money with your blog here, I don’t mean to hurt your feelings in any way but if you blog sucks, then you cannot earn a dime from blogging.

The first impression a first time visitor will have is your blog design, layout, speed and then the quality of your content. If your blog is cluttered with a lot of widgets on the sidebar, loads slowly or has a general poor design and layout, crowned with poor content quality then be sure your visitors will bounce of your site as fast as they landed, and while you may have high traffic stats, you may still find it hard to earn from your blog.

Whether your monetization model is affiliate marketing, Google adsense, direct banner sales etc, if you can’t keep your visitors long enough to move around a couple of pages on your blog which will not only improve your ads impression but possible clicks (CTR) then you are not ready to start making money with your blog.

Traffic

Most bloggers spend almost all their time creating contents, if you create all the contents in the world and no one reads them, then you won’t still be able to make money from your blog. When you have a blog with poor traffic, adding more contents doesn’t really help you get more readers.

Learn to improve your blog traffic, traffic is money. The more people you have visiting your site, the more chances you have at them clicking on your ads or buying your products. Monetization model

This is yet another area most bloggers fail, that Google Adsense worked for blog A does not mean it will work for blog B. You have to experiment with your blog’s monetization model to find which works best for you. You can even combine several models in a blog provided they don’t struggle to fit in.

While Google Adsense may not work for you, direct banner sales may work for you as a result of your blog design or traffic, same with affiliate marketing as a result of niche type. Some sites may not perform well for a particular monetization model; find which best works for yours. Ask people of same niche what works for them and try it out.

You lack a voice on your blog

How does your blog posts sound? Like a robot wrote them? Remember your audience is human, so you have to add personal touch to your blog if you are to start making money with your blog. Relate with your audience, use call-to actions always on your blog, ask your audience to do one thing or the other and respond to their own queries.

Do you have a list

“Money is on the list”, have you ever heard that saying before? If you are to start making money with your blog, then you have to build your subscribers list. With a list you can always relate with your audience, if you can capture a visitor on the first day be sure you can bring him back to come back again from your list, you can establish a strong relation and get them to always return.

You don’t have the patience to make money from your blog

Most of you believe blogging is a make money quick scheme; sorry to burst your bubbles, blogging is a serious business that requires patience and time. It took me 3 months to earn my first $100 from blogging even with my experience over the years as a webmaster, I have owned forums for over 5 years but when I decided to blog, I knew I needed patience to succeed, so if you think your money will start rolling in from your first article publication, I am sorry to disappoint you blogging is a little bit harder than that.

You are lazy

Laziness in blogging is an endemic in this business, how many guest posts have you published? How many blog comments do you leave on other blogs every day? When last did you contribute meaningfully to a forum discussion? If you are to start making money with your blog today, I challenge you to get up and be serious with blogging activities that will generally improve your blog. Take it as a task to publish guest posts on bigger blogs every week, leave at least 10 – 20 meaningful blog comments every day on other blogs, get active on both social media networks and forums.

What is your definition of blogging success?

Maybe you are earning $100 every month from blogging and think you are earning money? You need to see some people’s paycheck. Do not limit yourself, aspire more, push yourself higher and higher every day, don’t rest on your oars, create goals for your blog and see them come to fulfillment.  Redefine your blogging success if you are not earning enough to pay all your bills and leave you some savings in the bank.

 Children watch their parents and copy their ways of behavior. The behavior of parents impresses on their children more greatly than what they tell them either to do or not to do. Parents are to be obligated to their children by bringing them up properly and in the fear of God. They are to teach them the fundamental things they need to learn about correct values, attitudes and beliefs cherished by the society by being exemplary. Apart from being moral exemplars, parents should have time for their children. Children need the attention and love of their parents more than gifts they think they can buy for them as substitutes. According to Nwabueze (2000), indecent dressing could lead to the following:

1.    Sexual Harassment: 

There is the likelihood that ladies who dress indecently or provocatively could be prone to sexual harassment and or rape. These forms of dresses suggest that such ladies need attention and that they are irresponsible and so there are always irresponsible men to dialogue, lure or force them to bed for sex.

2.    HIV/AIDS: 

This is another risk factor that immodestly dressed ladies could be prone to. When such ladies are forced into sex against their will they may be exposed to venereal diseases because of lack of protection. One of such killer diseases is HIV/AIDS.

3.    Wrong use of the Internet:

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has helped to revolutionize the community tremendously. It has via the use of Internet, Communication satellites, mobile phones etc, helped to bring people together distance, culture or language notwithstanding. Through the activities of home videos, satellites and other media agents, values (faulty or correct), fashions (modern, modest and immodest) are traded across cultures and nations. In as much as ICT is helpful, consequential to human, and societal developments, the rate of abuse and the un-regulatory ways they are used call for great concern. Most of the youths and children that are exposed to some of their contents that most times are negative so quickly fall vulnerable. The parents of these children and their senior siblings in Diasporas are the ones promoting indecent and immoral practices and they are relayed through videos, pornography, and music as well as advertisement and fashion parades.

Possible Reasons Why Some Students Dress Indecently

This behavior is of a hydra-headed origin. It is not just a behavior that developed overnight, but an accumulated behavioral pattern that could be attributed to the home (neglect and or poor parenting), the effect of globalization arising from wrong values’ exportation and importation, a reflection of the high rate of moral decadence in the larger society (corruption and high rate of indiscipline among the leaders and the led), peer pressure and the desire to belong as well as fading values and demonization or demonic influence (Omede & Odiba, 2000).
