The Relevance of Sex Education to Moral Values and Academic Achievement

Formal education is needed to provide the child adequate information about his or herself. Sex education is designed to answer questions which young people ask about sex and marriage. For example, an adolescent child between 12 to 20 years of age, suddenly becomes aware of the changes that are taking place in his or her sex organs and therefore seeks various avenues to get answers to these sexual urges. It therefore become necessary that the young and old alike should acquire a good background of sex education and marital guidance for happy home life which is the bedrock of academic excellence in schools.
Personality development of a child takes its roots from his physical environment which is the home. All types of human behaviour are influenced by the environment and this includes:

1.    Emotional Imbalance: Parents must bring up their children in an atmosphere of love which is conductive for overall personality development of the child. The nation needs healthy children to make her great. A home that is always under stress is likely to produce children that are bitter to the society and this cannot help any nation.
2.    Home Discipline: Home discipline is a function of responsible parenthood as children emulate and take after their parents.
Sex education is relevant to moral lives when it is given at an early age to equip the young ones for the future challenges. Thus, 3 – 6, 6 – 7 and 7 years of age to 11 years of age and finally 12 years of ages is the best stage to teach the child about sex education. The saying is true that, “to be fore warned is to be fore armed” and so they will be disciplined and live happily to the expectation of their parents and to the society they find themselves. Sex education helps the child to adapt to his/her environment and develop a balanced personality. The little percentage of teenagers who were opportune to have adequate information on it is 100% comparable to the ignorant ones. Therefore, a well planned programme of sex education provides numerous educational benefits for both the individual and the society.
In all these, educators should focus on having discussions with the adolescents to bridge the communication gap between them and the adolescents and also teach the parents or guardians what they ought to be teaching their children as well. A sense of humour should also be built or created as this will help put the youth/youngster at ease before the parent’s teachers, counselors or whoever is engaging them in a constructive discussion.
