Nokia says India ‘least favourite market’

Finnish telecom giant Nokia has told India’s government that the country is now its “least favourable market” to operate in and it makes better sense to export its products from China, a report said Friday.

Nokia, which is fighting a 20-billion rupee ($311 million) tax demand from Indian authorities, urged the government to “act quickly to correct the wrong perception of India as a place for business”, The Indian Express newspaper reported.

“The political risk of operating in India” has become “suddenly substantially higher and may inevitably influence future decisions to develop one’s operations in India”, Nokia said in a letter quoted by the daily.

The reported warning comes at a bad time for India when foreign direct investment has slowed to a trickle amid mounting domestic economic woes including a plunging rupee, a huge current account deficit, slowing growth and perceived government policy paralysis.

The Finnish group did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the message which The Indian Express said was dated June 19 and was received by the finance ministry last month.

Nokia said its tax problems made it “more cost-efficient for Nokia to transfer the manufacture of mobile phones to China and to import them to the Indian market rather than manufacture them in Chennai”.

Nokia, which has one of its biggest plants world-wide in the southern city of Chennai, is among a string of multinationals in tax disputes in India including Cadbury Royal Dutch Shell and Vodafone.

India has stepped up its pursuit of alleged tax delinquents to reduce a hefty budget deficit.

Nokia insists software downloaded onto its mobiles in India should to be taxed in Finland under a bilateral treaty between the countries, but India’s tax authorities view it differently.

“Nokia does not think India can override its international obligations,” Nokia was quoted as saying.

Tax claims against Nokia and other multinationals have “too great an impact on the predictability and certainty of Indian business environment to be ignored”, Nokia added.

India — one of the world’s fastest-growing mobile phone markets — is the second largest market for Nokia which began operations in the country in 1995 and employs 8,000 workers directly in Chennai.

Nokia which had been the country’s leading handset maker for 14 years recently ceded its crown to South Korea’s Samsung.

A DRAWN CONCLUSION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION COMMUNICATION IN SCHOOLS

Overriding conclusion that emerges from this study is the need to examine how ICT have served as catalyst for effective utilization of information by mathematics teachers in a holistic policy context. There is no single policy set aside for planning policies and programmes to introduce ICT in the use of information by mathematics teachers.

Appraisal of Reviewed Literature

ICT have the potential for increasing access to and improving the relevance and quality of education. It thus represents a potentially equalizing strategy for developing countries. ICT greatly facilitates the acquisition and absorption of knowledge, offering developed countries unprecedented opportunities to enhance educational system, improve policy formulation and execution, and widen the range of opportunities for creative science.

Prospects of ICT Use in Schools

Despite the fact that Nigerian and in fact most African countries came late into the ICT world, the adoption of the Nigerian policy for information technology in 2001 is the right step in ICT application in every sector of the nation’s life and in particular in education. The policy is designed to ensure that Nigeria as a nation recognizes the strategic importance of ICT for national development. Successful application in every sector can only be assured through adequate coverage of needed areas. Identified gaps can be filled through the environment or important stakeholders/actors such as the teachers and managers of education.
Specifically, Kwocha (2007) indicated the following as some urgent steps required towards the adoption and use of ICT in education:
a. The adoption of ICT international standards and its inclusion in the Nigeria curriculum and in particular in the teachers’ education curriculum. Continuous provision and training of teachers in ICT skill acquisition.
b. Development and training of ICT experts specifically for instruction design and development, who will work in partnership with educators and teachers.
c. Government at all levels should make ICT a matter of priority, improve the funds specifically needed for the training of teachers/students in computer education who will be equipped with ICT knowledge with skills.
d. There is need for the Nigerian government to address seriously the issues of the erratic electricity power supply while on the other hand schools wishing to adopt the integration of ICT in their training-learning process should as a matter of urgency procure a generating set, that can supplement power supply.

Causes of Low Level ICT Application in Nigerian Schools

Research confirms that ICT development and application are not well established in Nigeria because of poor information infrastructure (Adomi, 2006; Aginam, 2006). It was reported by Southwood (2004) that more than 40% of the population of Africa is in areas not covered by telecom services. Schools located in such areas will experience ICT connectivity problems. This finding is corroborated by Ndiku (2003), Wims and Lawler (2007) who discovered that insufficient number of computers and peripheral device inhibit development of ICT by teachers and by Plante and Beattie (2004) who observed that inadequate ICT was a challenge to integration of technologies in Canadian schools. similarly, Okwudishu (2005) discovered that unavailability of some ICT component in the schools hampered teachers’ use of ICT. This problem may be due to underfunding (Enakrire & Onyenenia, 2007).

ICT Application in Nigerian Secondary Schools

There are developments in Nigerian education sector which indicate some level of ICT application in secondary schools. The Federal Government of Nigeria, in the National Policy on Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004) recognizes the prominent role of ICT in the modern worlds, and has integrated ICT into education in Nigeria. To actualize this goal, the document states that government will provide basic infrastructure and training at the primary school. At the junior secondary school, computer education has been made a pre-vocational elective, and is a vocational elective at the senior secondary school. It is also the intention of government to provide necessary infrastructure and training for the integration of ICT in the secondary school system.

Benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Research has shown that the appropriate use of ICTs can catalyze the paradigmatic shift content and pedagogy that is at the heart of education reform in 21st century (Bransford, 1999). If designed and implemented properly, ICT-supported education can promote the acquisition of the knowledge and skills that will empower students for lifelong learning.
Pelgrum (2001) identified the benefits of ICT in education to include:

Concept of Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate and to create, disseminate, store, and manage information (Blurton, 1999). This means ICT help in the storage and management of information. Ayo (2001) also defined ICT as the use of computer system and telecommunication equipment in information processing. ICT as described by Scott (2002) encompasses a range of applications, communications and technologies which aid information retrieval and research communication and administration. These include: internet access, electronic mail, CD-Roms, telephone, online databases, library services and machines. It has become a global phenomenon of great importance and concern in all aspect of human endeavour spanning across education, government, business, labour market, shares, productivity, trade, agriculture, commerce and others.

THE ROLE OF COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

The purpose of enriching curriculum in Nigeria education will imbued the teaching force with the rudimentary skills for applying ICTs and product of technology in their assignment to foster greater intellectual understanding. Besides, the use of ICTs in the teaching of mathematics provides additional learning resources that will bring about rapid development.

THE ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT)

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to the development of Nigeria cannot be underestimated. Educational system gives great recognition to ICT as indispensable tool in teaching, learning, research and school management in a number of ways. When ICTs are employed in education given the right condition, they can accelerate enrich and deepen basic skills in reading, writing, mathematics and they can motivate and engage students to learn as they become more independent and responsible for their learning. ICTs also help to relate academics to the practices of today’s work. ICTs, especially network technologies have been found to encourage active learning, support innovative teaching, reduce the isolation of teachers, and encourage teachers and students to become active researchers and learners. Internet group, Spark secures $2m investment

Lagos-based Internet group, Spark has raised a $2million investment from a syndicate of 17 international high net individual investors, based on a $10m valuation to revolutionize Nigeria’s investment eco-system, focusing solely on the country’s Internet startup scene.

Jason Njoku, Spark Managing partner says: “We set out to grow the Spark companies to be market leaders. This requires capital. Our companies are laser focused, totally exceeding our initial expectations and showing increasingly strong metrics. Every Spark company focuses and generates revenue which we feel is essential to the survival of any Internet startup in Nigeria.”

Another Spark Managing partner, Bastian Gotter, also adds: “Capital here in Nigeria is prohibitively expensive for most, so start-ups tend not to be able to grow at the rate that is required to become a mature and profitable business. Spark companies now have the capital behind them to invest in technology, good staff, building out their inventory”

Spark companies currently employ 130 people across the nine launched companies, three of which have already secured second-round seed investments totaling an additional $700, ooo  from Njoku and Gotter, primarily to build upon their current market leading positions, compete more effectively and enable them to expand fast enough to meet consumer demand.

ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING OF MATHEMATICS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

The study was designed to ascertain the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the effective teaching of mathematics in secondary schools in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State. To direct the study, three research questions were stated.

The Notion of Standard in Teaching

One standard common notion in teaching is that “if the learner has not learned, the teacher has not taught”. This view is helpful in drawing the attention of the teacher to the important task he has to fulfill as part of his contribution to nation building. The major task is to ensure that teaching and learning are effective and progressive in order for students to discover their potentials.

Parental Level of Education and Female Teaching Aspiration

Educational levels of parents differ from family to family, some family or parents are graduates, some are school certificate leavers, while some are even less than or nothing at all. Literacy level of parents differs accordingly and goes a long way to affect the children’s academic achievement.

Marital Obligation Influence and Female Teaching Aspiration

Marital means having to do with marriage life; hence Nwani (2001) noted that marriage is a contract between a man and a woman who agrees to live together as husband and wife. Bimbo (2001) expresses that marriage is a partnership in which the spirit of give and take abound and it is a union of two forgivers living together.

Early Marriage Influence and Female Teaching Aspiration

Marriage is defined as a means by which society regulates sexual behaviour provided for the bearing of children and allowed for the economic maintenance of the family unit. Marriage therefore, is a concept with varying definition by people in different profession (Ebenuwa-Okoh, 1995). Early marriage in this study is a marriage that takes place at early stage of a female.

Socio-Economic Status of Homes’ Influence and Female Teaching Aspiration

Socio-economic status or background can be said to be the related income of parents, their occupation, and their level of education. The socio-economic background of a family tells us the social class the family belongs to on the social pyramid and the kind of wealth, rights, obligations, powers, privileges and so on.

The Concept of Teaching

The concept of teaching is better described than defined because it has been very difficult to accept as being the best definition. Attempts are made by some authors on their review about teaching.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING PART 3

  Purpose of the Study

This study aimed at determining the extent to which females teaching and career development among students. Specifically, the study will:
1.  Find out the extent of socio-economic status of home influence teaching as a career.

2.  Determine the extent which early marriage influence teaching as a career.
3.  To find out the extent marital obligation influence teaching as a career.
4.  Find out the extent parental level of education influence teaching as a career.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING 2

According to Amali (1999), choosing a career is one of the most disturbing problems that have hindered the technological advancement of our nation. UNICEF (2004) female teachers allow greater control of their families positively, influence, and produce other health and social developmental benefits.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING

 Chapter One
Introduction
Background of the Study
Nationally and internationally, education is a paramount importance because it fosters sustainable development. Studies have shown a strong correlation across countries between level of human capital formation and level of educational development and it is often used as one the major indicators of national development (Fadun, 2008). Education as a tool for the empowerment and sustainable development is indispensable both to the individual and the state at large.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING AMONG FEMALE STUDENTS IN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

Abstract

The study investigates psycho-social factor influences choice of teaching among female students in College of Education, Warri, Delta State. The categories of respondents were female students, simple random sampling technique was used in five departments. Two hundred responded to the questionnaires which serve as the instrument for the study.

Cameroon's President Orders the close of Pentecostal Churches

The Cameroon's President Paul Biya has ordered the closure of nearly 100 Christian churches in key cities, citing criminal practices organized by Pentecostal pastors that threaten the security of the West African nation.
But Pentecostal pastors said the move is evidence of Biya's insecurity about the churches' criticism of the government.

Biya is using the military to permanently shut down all Pentecostal church denominations in the nation's capital, Yaounde, and the North West Regional capital, Bamenda, which have the largest Christian populations in Cameroon.

More than 50 churches have now been closed, with the government targeting nearly 100 in eight other regions.

"We will get rid of all the so-called Christian Pentecostal pastors who misuse the name of Jesus Christ to fake miracles and kill citizens in their churches. They have outstretched their liberty," Mbu Anthony Lang, a government official in Bamenda, told CNN Wednesday.

Nearly 500 Pentecostal churches operate in Cameroon, but fewer than 50 are legal, he added.

On Sunday, a 9-year-old Christian girl collapsed and died during a prayer session in Winners' Chapel, a Pentecostal church in Bamenda. The girl's mother, Mih Theresa, told CNN Wednesday that the pastor intended to cast out the numerous demons that were in control of her daughter's life.

"I want the government to stop these pastors who use mysterious powers to pull Christians and kill then for more powers. All my children have ran away from the Catholic Church in search for miracles, signs and wonders," she told CNN while holding back tears.

Another Christian, Mveng Thomas, said his marriage ended abruptly when a Pentecostal pastor ordered his wife to dissolve their union. He said the pastor described him as "an unrepentant devil."

Pastors marched against the government's decision Wednesday in Bamenda and Douala. Pastors said the Biya government sees the mass proliferation of churches as a threat.

Boniface Tum, a bishop of the Christian Church of God in Yaounde, said that Biya, who has been president since 1982, is becoming insecure about the freedom of speech within these churches.

"Authorizing only the Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Muslim, and a few other churches, is a strict violation of the right to religion," Tum added.
Targeted Pentecostal Christians in Bamenda are transforming their private homes into churches.

North West Regional governor Adolphe Lele L'Afrique said Wednesday that police had discovered the abduction of 30 children under age 18 by a pastor in Bamenda. The pastor said he wanted to remove the children from a bad society, Lele added.

Government officials also say that some pastors convince congregants that they do not need professional medical treatment for their ailments.

"How can a pastor say the sick needs no medical doctor? We need sanity in our Christian lives," Nyang Blaise, a youth leader for Biya's ruling party, CPDM, told CNN.
One woman said her mother was refusing cancer treatments because of her pastor.

"My mother's condition is worsening after doctors confirmed she had cancer. She is dying silently, and yet we cannot persuade her to see a doctor for proper treatment, against her pastor's wish," Deborah Tanyi said.
My Question now is, could this be  Anti-christ

BLACKBERRY TO SALE THEIR COMPANY

BlackBerry stock rose Monday after Canada's flagship technology company said its board has launched a formal review of its "strategic alternatives"  including the possibility of selling the smart phone
The company says the review could result in BlackBerry forming joint ventures, strategic partnerships or a sale of BlackBerry. It didn't specifically mention going private, an idea that has gained favour recently according to recent reports.

However, the long-anticipated formal strategic review which will seek to get the best deal for BlackBerry shareholders  pushed up BlackBerry share prices.

RIMTimeline: Research in Motion's rise and fall
BlackBerry shares were rose more than 10 per cent, or $1.08, to close at $11.13 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, which is about $8 below the high in January when the stock was boosted by optimism for its BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

The rising stock is a sign of shareholder frustration, according to equity analyst Troy Crandall, of the Montreal-based investment firm MacDougall, MacDougall and MacTier.

The BlackBerry 10 has not met expectations since its debut in January and the company has long talked about turning around its sagging fortunes.

But investors "haven't really seen much come forth from management," Crandall told CBC News. "It's about time they did something."

BlackBerry also announced Monday that Prem Watsa, the head of Canadian insurance company Fairfax Financial and one of BlackBerry's key shareholders, has resigned from the BlackBerry board due to potential conflicts.

Fairfax Financial, which owns 9.9 per cent of BlackBerry, is reported to be in talks with private equity investors to find ways to take BlackBerry private and his departure is taken as a sign of potential interest.

Others who may want to buy the company could include the Canada Pension Plan, which has previously expressed interest, and private equity firm Silver Lake Partners, which reportedly has been in talks with the company on possible collaboration.

Buyers would have been easier to find a few years ago during the company's heyday, said Crandall, when Microsoft, Oracle and other big names were thought to be interested.

"But things have changed and [those companies] are not so interested from what we can tell," he said.

Watsa joined the Blackberry board in early 2012 as part of attempts to revitalize the company, previously called Research In Motion, as its previous long-time co-CEOs stepped aside and installed Thorsten Heins as chief executive.

"I continue to be a strong supporter of the company, the board and management as they move forward during this process, and Fairfax Financial has no current intention of selling its shares," Watsa said in a statement issued by BlackBerry.

The announcement comes amid unconfirmed reports that the Waterloo, Ont.-based company may go private a move that could result in one or more investors buying out other shareholders and delisting the stock.

Last month, the company laid off 250 employees at its new-product testing facility, and in 2012 shed 5,000 jobs as it sought to regain its footing in the highly competitive smartphone market.

Heins said there are "compelling long-term opportunities" for the company's products including a new generation of BlackBerry smartphones, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and a new secure global data network.

Teacher's Activity

It is well-known fact that the quality of an educational system depends on its teachers. So for effective learning in any subject, the teacher is expected to employ everything at his disposal. For instance Onwuka (1981) is highlighting some basic principles for teaching stated “the teacher has to provide opportunities for the pupils to satisfy their needs and curiosity”. He further points out that “education is a living thing and teachers should realize and show that, through activities that can create a relaxed atmosphere so that nobody feels threatened”.

Role of the Teacher as a Profession

Concept of Teaching

The concept of teaching is better described than defined because it has been very difficult to accept as being the best definition. Attempts are made by some authors on their review about teaching. Ezenweani (2002) defined teaching as the ability to guide one to gain knowledge in a classroom setting, the teacher does the work of guiding the learner, through social interactions (student-teacher, student-student) to gain experience that are worthwhile for social living in the larger society. While the teacher does the work of guidance (from the simple meaning of it), the student does the work of an apprentice.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING AMONG FEMALE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Nationally and internationally, education is a paramount importance because it fosters sustainable development. Studies have shown a strong correlation across countries between level of human capital formation and level of educational development and it is often used as one the major indicators of national development (Fadun, 2008). Education as a tool for the empowerment and sustainable development is indispensable both to the individual and the state at large. This is one of the major philosophical objectives that education is set to achieve as entrenched in the National Policy on Education (FRN, 2004).

PROBLEM STATEMENT IN STRESS MANAGEMENT

Principals, like any other Chief Executive of an employee group, face their own unique set of professional problems and challenges that may cause them stress. Heibert and Ferber (1984) indicate that staff inter-personal interactions, working conditions (inadequate resources,

THE PRINCIPLES OF STRESS MANAGEMENT.

Stress is a common phenomenon associated with leadership and is unavoidable when effectiveness of the organization is paramount. Therefore, how they are managed so as to achieve and maintain

HOW TO MANAGE STRESS

Some psychologists see stress as a generalized non-specific of the body to any demand made on it (Lazarus, 1966; Selye, 1974). Selye (1974) describes stress as physical and psychological reactions to response of the body demanding stimulus events.

PRINCIPALS’ DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND STRESS MANAGEMENT

Introduction

Background of the Study

Schools like any other organizations are set to achieve some desired goals. Such achievements depend greatly on the type of leadership provided by the principal who does not only interact with his staff and students and other environmental factors that make up the school, but is also confronted with personal characteristics that have vital roles to play in his day-to-day running of the school.

My wife does not display public affection for me – Julius Agwu

Julius Agwu is one of Nigeria’s most successful entertainers. He got married to his wife, Ibiere, in 2008,and they are blessed with a girl and expecting the second baby soon. The couple takes us through their journey into marriage. Happy reading…

How I met my wife
I met my wife at a wedding in Port-Harcourt in 2000. She was part of the bridal train. My mind was blown away when I sighted her. Thereafter, we became friends. Somehow, we lost contact with each other and later, met again in 2002. The rest is history. We got married in 2008.

Courtship
We dated for eight years. This is because her parents insisted that she must complete her education. After her Youth Service, they insisted she had to enroll for her master’s degree program. And I kept waiting for her.
When you court your spouse, that’s when you understand yourselves better. You find out what she likes and what she doesn’t; her shortcomings as well as yours and find a way to blend with her. Some marriages are having problems today because of the inability of the couple to bring God into it. These are two people from different backgrounds coming together to live as husband and wife. I am very temperamental and my wife too is a stubborn woman. But in spite of these shortcomings, we have learnt to manage our issues.

Attraction
She’s not only beautiful, she is also intelligent. We connected immediately. She combines beauty and brain. I realise she’s something different. It’s not every lady you dated that you can propose to. Not every date can lead to marriage because God created every man and created a wife for that particular man. God also created every woman and created a husband for that woman. That two people dated does not mean that they must become husband and wife. Your prayer should be that nobody should marry your own wife or husband. That’s how we connected.
