Things to Note before Buying Power Bank

5 Things Nigerians Should Know Before Buying a Power Bank

Power is yet to be regular or stable in Nigeria. Hence, Nigerians are searching for alternatives to keep their phones, laptops and other devices charged. Interestingly, it seems phones are getting more
attention as there are now power banks which you can use to charge your phone when there is prolonged lack of power. As power banks have become very useful, it is very important that users know some things when they are buying one. This is important because there are many complaints about power banks like it takes ages to charge, it is substandard and/or its efficiency is less than 50%. You don’t want to spend money on this.

Weight of the Power Bank

Power banks come in different sizes and weight. You buy a portable one over a bulky one so that it will not become a burden when moving around.

Brand of the Power Bank

The brand of a power bank is vital. You already know the reliable brands that are popular for quality, durability, and resale value. Some of these brands may be expensive but you are guaranteed that you will use it for a long time. Despite this, you still have to be careful so that the brand name is not different from the package. Hence, don’t patronize touts.

Power output of the Power Bank

The power output of a power bank is the reason you are buying it. If the power output is low, you don’t need to buy it. A power bank needs at least 2 amperages to charge. So you should check if the power bank is has 2.1 amp output.

Power capacity of the Power Bank

For every power bank you want to buy, it must be 2.5 times more than the capacity of your phone. In other words, if the battery of your phone is 4000mAh, you should buy a power bank that is 10,000 mAh. You will only use about 6,700 mAh to charge. This is better than buying the one with the same mAh with your phone.

Quality of the Power Bank

Nigeria has become a dumping ground for different substandard products including power banks. Besides buying a brand, it is important to be careful not to buy a fake one because you have many in the market.

Digital dementia

How to Keep Your Android Device Screen Safe - Phones

Nowadays, smartphones and tablets come with the toughest and most scratch-resistant touch screen panels, thanks to such materials like Corning Gorilla Glass. It takes a lot to break and damage them. This, on the other hand, is not impossible if you behave recklessly with your Android device. Here are our tips on how to protect your Android touch screen.

1. Choose your tool wisely!

Only use your fingers or stylus, if one comes with the device, like on the Galaxy Note 3 for example. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra allows you to use pencils on the display, however this should not be done with any other device.

Only use your stylus or finger on an Android touch screen, and for pete's sake, be gentle! © androidpit
2. Know its limits

Avoid letting your touch screen come into contact with other electrical devices. There are many people who think that magnets will damage your phone, when in fact it likely won’t. The only thing that a magnet might do is mess up your built-in magnetic sensor which is used for compass apps.

3. Try not to get shocked

Electrostatic discharges, meaning a sudden surge of electricity between two connected electrical devices, could ultimately cause the touchscreen to malfunction. This might happen when your smartphone is placed near an object isolated to the ground that conducts electricity.

4. Be gentle, use with care!

This may seem obvious, but do not tap your phone with any sharp objects or bang it to make it work if it’s being laggy. Your smartphone isn’t like your old TV set. Also, though you might get over excited while playing Candy Crush, do not apply excessive pressure to the display.

5. Don't let it idle

Ever heard of the term burn-in? This is what sometimes happens when you leave the touchscreen idle for an extended amount of time without deactivating the display. What you’ll see when you switch to something new is an afterimage, ghosting or screen burn-in, all terms apply here. If this is happening to you, check out how to fix a screen burn-in. One of the best ways to prevent this from happening though, is to set the lock screen to turn off after a certain amount of time in the settings of your smartphone or tablet under the lock screen section.

6. It's better to be safe than sorry, wear protection!

Invest in a screen protector, sleeve, padded bag or hard case for your tablet or smartphone. There are many cheap but effective ones that you can find on Amazon, WalMart, eBay etc. If you drop your phone, scratches are the least of your worries, but shattering or cracking can happen even with the most durable of panels.

7. The sun isn't your friend

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight. Leaving your smartphone or tablet with an LCD display out on the patio in mid-summer can really damage the quality.

8. Treat it like a diva

When cleaning your display, use a microfiber cloth, which is ideal for touch screens. You can even use the one that came with your sunglasses. Be careful if using a moist cloth. Simply dampen it slightly or breath on the screen and then wipe it down gently. If you do end up using water, make sure that it is distilled water since normal tap water often carries calcium and other types of minerals, and do not over-rub. Let your phone air dry if there is any water left over so that you don’t accidentally push any liquid into the phone’s inner hardware.

What tips do you recommend when it comes to taking care of your touch screen?

Ex-Apple CEO reportedly mulling bid to rescue BlackBerry

We've seen a steady stream of potential suitors for BlackBerry in recent months, but unnamed sources are now claiming ex-Apple CEO John Sculley is looking into taking control of the company. The Globe and Mail reports that Sculley, who famously helped oust Steve Jobs from Apple in the '80s, working with partners in "exploring a joint bid" for the troubled Canadian smartphone maker.

Although he refused to confirm or deny the rumor, Sculley has long been a fan of the company. Speaking to the Globe and Mail, Sculley says "there's a lot of future value in Blackberry," but "without experienced people who have run this type of business, and without a strategic plan, it would be really challenging."
Other companies reportedly interested in BlackBerry include Lenovo, Cisco, Google, and the company's founders. The only confirmed bid so far came from insurer Fairfax Financial Holdings, which offered $4.7 billion. Although Fairfax's bid was for the entire company, BlackBerry isn't against splitting up its various divisions to ensure its recovery. While its smartphone sales have slumped in recent years, the manufacturer's enterprise operations have fared better, and would likely appeal to a broader range of companies.

New Smartphones with Best Cameras

With a host of smartphones being sold today, it may be difficult to differentiate between them and find too drastic differences in what they do. After all, most of their functionality is based on apps, and they are the same for all phones using the same platform. However, apart from some other hardware related features, one of the things that can still significantly differ from one phone to the next is the camera that it sports. Even though there are still people who will only occasionally snap a photo with their phone, a large majority of smartphone users take photos practically on daily bases. However, the phones that we are presenting today are not exactly ideal for causal photographers, instead they would be better suited for people who really need to take high quality pictures and are prepared to pay the price.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

One of the largest advantages of digital cameras over smartphones when it comes to image quality was found in the fact that digital cameras usually come equipped with an optical zoom, while smartphones had to rely on digital zooming. This would inevitably reduce image quality and thus make your smartphone inferior in this regard to even an average digital camera. People from Samsung recognized this and decided to offer a perfect blend of a smartphone and a digital camera in their Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.
This hybrid comes with a 16 megapixel quality camera and a 10X optical zoom. This does make the phone look somewhat cumbersome, as it is roughly the size of a typical digital camera, but gives you the ability to make amazing images, which is coupled with the full functionality of a smartphone. The Optical Image Stabilizer feature makes sure that your images are clear even if you are not at your steadiest when taking the photo, while Smart Mode gives you live information on the focal length and light levels, to help you make better photos.

Nokia Lumia 1020

nokia-lumia-1020-camera
This masterpiece that comes with Windows 8 and an astounding 41 megapixel PureView camera will make you redefine your notion about what exactly a camera phone is capable of doing. Even though the camera protrudes from the back of the phone, making it somewhat cumbersome, it is more than worth the sacrifice when you consider its features. The camera was taken from their PureView 808 phone and further improved. Camera holds Carl Zeiss optics and has no less than 6 physical lenses, assuring great image quality. With a host of interesting and useful features and excellent low light image quality, Nokia Lumia 1020 is by far one of the best camera phones currently out there.

HTC One

htc one
While Nokia and Samsung opted for hardware solutions when trying to improve their cameras, HTC took an interesting approach in redefining the way images are taken. They introduced UltraPixels, which are trying to take into account some aspects of taking a photo that were previously not addressed. They decided to use larger pixels which could capture more light and provide for better image quality. The F/2.0 aperture that the phone uses when taking images guarantees great picture quality, and seeing that there are fewer pixels to process, these images take up less room on your storage drive and are easier to share on social networks.

How to Restore iPhone / iPad Without Losing Jailbreak

With iOS 7 already released, restoring an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch may be risky since you’re likely to lose your iOS 6 jailbreak and be forced to upgrade to iOS 7 (which everyone doubts would see a jailbreak anytime soon). Normally, if you restore a jailbroken Apple device, you lose everything including your jailbreak.

To prevent this, it’s a good idea to restore back to stock keeping your jailbreak intact and iLex R.A.T. does this pretty well. This app lets you clean up your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, erasing all Cydia tweaks and reverting back to stock settings without touching your jailbreak. You can even re-install Cydia with this app if you feel it’s malfunctioning.
If your device is experiencing Safe Mode loop or  boot loop, stuck at Apple logo or going through a drastic battery drain, iLex R.A.T. should be able to fix all these.

How to Install and Use

1. Open Cydia and go Manage > Sources > Edit > Add
2. Add this repo: http://cydia.myrepospace.com/iLEXiNFO
iLEX RAT
3. Under Sources, go to  iLEXiNFO repository and install iLEX R.A.T.
4. This should install all dependencies needed to run the app
5. Check your Springboard for the new iLEX R.A.T icon
6. Running the app should present two options:
  • iLEX R.A.T.: This removes all Cydia tweaks and dependencies installed after jailbreak but keeps contents, settings, jailbreak and activation
  • iLEX Restore: This restores your iDevice back to stock. All content and settings are erased but jailbreak and activation remains intact.
7. Select your desired option and follow the screen prompt to restore your device.

Nokia says India ‘least favourite market’

Finnish telecom giant Nokia has told India’s government that the country is now its “least favourable market” to operate in and it makes better sense to export its products from China, a report said Friday.

Nokia, which is fighting a 20-billion rupee ($311 million) tax demand from Indian authorities, urged the government to “act quickly to correct the wrong perception of India as a place for business”, The Indian Express newspaper reported.

“The political risk of operating in India” has become “suddenly substantially higher and may inevitably influence future decisions to develop one’s operations in India”, Nokia said in a letter quoted by the daily.

The reported warning comes at a bad time for India when foreign direct investment has slowed to a trickle amid mounting domestic economic woes including a plunging rupee, a huge current account deficit, slowing growth and perceived government policy paralysis.

The Finnish group did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the message which The Indian Express said was dated June 19 and was received by the finance ministry last month.

Nokia said its tax problems made it “more cost-efficient for Nokia to transfer the manufacture of mobile phones to China and to import them to the Indian market rather than manufacture them in Chennai”.

Nokia, which has one of its biggest plants world-wide in the southern city of Chennai, is among a string of multinationals in tax disputes in India including Cadbury Royal Dutch Shell and Vodafone.

India has stepped up its pursuit of alleged tax delinquents to reduce a hefty budget deficit.

Nokia insists software downloaded onto its mobiles in India should to be taxed in Finland under a bilateral treaty between the countries, but India’s tax authorities view it differently.

“Nokia does not think India can override its international obligations,” Nokia was quoted as saying.

Tax claims against Nokia and other multinationals have “too great an impact on the predictability and certainty of Indian business environment to be ignored”, Nokia added.

India — one of the world’s fastest-growing mobile phone markets — is the second largest market for Nokia which began operations in the country in 1995 and employs 8,000 workers directly in Chennai.

Nokia which had been the country’s leading handset maker for 14 years recently ceded its crown to South Korea’s Samsung.

Microsoft and Blackberry cut Surface and Z10 prices

Microsoft and Blackberry have both cut prices on their flagship products in a bid to boost sales.
Microsoft dropped the price of the 32GB Surface RT to £279 from £400 in the UK, with the 64GB model's price down by the same amount to £359.

And in the US, Blackberry has cut the price of the Z10 phone to as low as $49 with a contract - down from $199 four months ago.
Both firms have developed the devices to show off their latest software.
And both have tried to compete with Apple, Google and Samsung on smartphones and tablets - with limited success.
"It's a big deal for both companies," Tony Cripps, a telecoms analyst at Ovum, told the BBC. "Competing with the Apples and Samsungs of this world is tough, and it's a difficult climate to put out high-end products when the market is so dominated by a couple of players."
In the US, the cheapest Surface tablet went down to $349 (£230) from $499.
