The Notion of Standard in Teaching

One standard common notion in teaching is that “if the learner has not learned, the teacher has not taught”. This view is helpful in drawing the attention of the teacher to the important task he has to fulfill as part of his contribution to nation building. The major task is to ensure that teaching and learning are effective and progressive in order for students to discover their potentials.
Role of the Teacher as a Profession

Hanson (1964) cited in Ibarakumo (2009) rightly stresses the supreme importance attached to the teacher when he states that “an important sign of the long-range health of a nation is the spirit and quality of its teachers. The future of the nation rests in the hands of the teachers for qualities they possess today will inevitably be reflected in the citizens of tomorrow”. He also pointed out that one of the characteristic of an effective teacher is to “cultivate creativity, spontaneity and innovation” can the traditional teacher allowed to allude above provide such creativity and spontaneity in teaching. Usually, the mode of teaching preferred by such teachers is the lecture method. This mode of teaching does not make for creativity among learners neither does it elicit from them spontaneous response to text.
The teacher’s function in the learning process is one of guidance, guiding learners to acquire knowledge, skills or attitudes. These objectives can be reached if the students are acquainted with the objectives and are also shown how to achieve them by spending time discussing the purpose of doing various activities.
