2. We will think that by now #1 will be equal to $1.

3. We will think that by now three million jobs would have been created.

4. We will think that by now unemployed youths would have been receiving #5,000.00 stipends.

5. We will think that by now pupils would have been getting at least a meal(including fruits) in school.

6. We will think that by now Buhari would have made his assets and liabilities public.

7. We will think that by now maternal and children healthcare services would be free.

11. We think that by now Nigeria will be the Greatest and strongest Economy in the world.

12. We will think by now a bag of rice will be N5000 with a boom in Agriculture.

13. We will think by now Nigeria would have recovered all looted funds.

14. We will think by now Nnamdi Kanu would have declared Independent State of Biafra.

15. We will think that by now Nigeria would have gotten 3 standard working Refinery.

16. We will think that by now Nigeria would have stopped importation of fuel.

17. We will think by now office of the First Lady will no longer exist.

18. We will think by now National Assembly salary would have been cut down to 50%.

19. We will think that by now 720,000 jobs by the 36 states in the federation yearly (20,000 per state) would have been created.

20. We will think that by now there would be permanent peace in the Niger Delta.

21. We will think that by now Chibok girls would have been rescued.

22.  We will think that by now the government would have started creating additional middle-class of at least two million new home owners in the first year in government and one million annually thereafter.

23. By now everybody will be blaming Goodluck Jonathan and calling him clueless.

The list is almost endless..."

Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Dangote Group, one of Nigeria’s largest private firms has begun the steady cutback of employees as it has been hit with problems relating to the economic crisis in the country. The first set of 48 staff were disengaged last week consisting of 36 foreign staff and 12 Nigerians.

Though there was no official of the group willing to speak on the matter yet, Punch reports that the decision to sack the workers was not unconnected with the current high cost of running business in the country occasioned by the unavailability of foreign exchange and the unprecedented hike in the Naira to dollar exchange rate.

This was especially true in the case of the foreigners who were being paid in foreign exchange, as the Naira’s free fall in value, coupled with the unavailability of forex made it increasingly difficult for the company to pay the foreigners. The Nigerians were reportedly laid off due to disciplinary issues.

Probably what will be more disconcerting to workers of the company is the fact that this is not likely to be the end of the mass sack in the company. According to a letter signed by the CEO of the group, Aliko Dangote, there is a strong possibility that more will be sacked.

“This year has been a very challenging year for us as a business. The unavailability of foreign exchange coupled with an unprecedented hike in the exchange rate has resulted in increased costs across the organization.

This called for a proper review and adjustment of our costs across board to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the deployment of our factors of production in a bid to eliminate redundancies that we know exist, which resulted in some tough decisions, which means losing staff, including some of our colleagues.

On Friday, October 14, 2016, we began the process of staff cutbacks as it is imperative to review our human capital deployment for the required cutbacks that would ensure efficiency and eliminate redundancies in the allocation of human resources.

This first phase of this exercise involved the cutback of 36 expatriate staff across the Dangote Cement Plc and Dangote Industries Limited, and 12 local staff members in Dangote Industries Limited.”

The sack of employees of the company was not entirely unforeseen as the CEO, Aliko Dangote had, according to a recent index released by Bloomberg, lost $5.4 billion due to the depreciation of the Naira and the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN’s decision to ration dollars to stem huge capital outflows.

TAXONOMY OF TOMATO

TAXONOMY OF TOMATO
Tomato belongs to the family Solanaceae (also known as night shade family), genus Solanum, sub family Solanoidaeae and tribe Solaneae. (Taylor., 1986). The genus include a small collection of cultivated and wild species like S. lycopersicum Milli, wild species like S.peruvianum, S.hirsum, S. glanduosam, S. pinpinellifolium, S.
cheesemannii. Taxonomists recently changed the name as Solanum lycopersicon. The tomato is native to Central and South America. It is a popular and versatile food. In tomato only fruits can be eaten since the leaves contain toxic alkaloids. The cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicon, is the second most consumed vegetable worldwide and a well studied crop in terms of genetics, genomics, and breeding. The tomato is a perennial plant but usually grown as an annual plant. It is reported that the tomato plant can reach up to 3metre. The stems are somewhat weak and often require staking or support such as a tomato cage. Branching at the base is monopodial, becomes sympodial higher up. The tomato leaves are 10 to 30cm long and unevenly imparipinnate compound with variously indented or lobed margins. Both the stems and the leaves are slightly rough and fuzzy. The inflorescence of tomato bare small yellow flowers has five pointed lobes on the corolla. The tomato fruits are fleshy berries green when unripe and become deep red and shiny when ripe. The tomato cultivars differ a great deal in size, shape and colour. There are also yellow, orange, green and brown varieties of fruits. The shape can vary from small cherry tomatoes, pear shaped tomatoes to large irregular shaped beefy tomatoes. The shape, size and colour of tomato decide their market value. Number of processed items prepared on large scale for consumption as well as for export using different varieties of tomato.

PRODUCTION OF TOMATO

Previously tomatoes were grown only during favourable season, but nowadays tomatoes are grown round the year. Because of its economic importance, area under cultivation is increasing every year. The estimated area and production of tomato for India are about 3,50,000 hectares and 53,00,000 tons respectively. Worldwide tomato production in 2005 totaled 29.9 million metric tons and production for the 2005/2006 season in Europe totaled 10.6 million metric tons.
Tomato is the second largest vegetable crop in India. The average productivity of tomato in our country (Nigeria) is merely 158 q/ha while its productivity in USA is 588 q/ha, in Greece 498 q/ha, in Italy 466 q/ha and 465 q/ha in Spain. Ten most promising states of India for tomato crop have been identified and utilized for further study on various aspects of tomato crop.
Bihar State in India is at leading position followed by UP and Orissa in terms of area under tomato crop. The maximum production and productivity have been showed by UP followed by Karnataka, Punjab, West Bengal and Assam. India’s export of value added tomato products was around 758.6 tons, which included 41tons of canned tomato products, 38 tons tomato juice valued at and 595 tons ketch-up in the year 2005-2006. This accounts for than thousand crores to the Indian economy even with least price like three rupees per kilo. This significant achievement in tomato production is possible due to the development of high yielding varieties/hybrids, breeding for biotic and abiotic stresses, resistance and heterosis breeding.

SPECIES OF TOMATO FRUIT

There are around 7500 tomato varieties grown for various purposes. Heirloom tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among home gardeners and organic producers, since they tend to produce more interesting and flavourful crops at the cost of disease resistance and productivity. (Allen,. 2008)
In 1973, Israeli scientists developed the world’s first long shelf-life commercial tomato varieties. (Yissum, 2013)
Tomato varieties are roughly divided into several categories , based mostly on shape and size.
  • Slicing or globe tomatoes are the usual tomatoes of commerce, used for a wide variety of processing and fresh eating.
  • Beefsteak tomatoes are large tomatoes often used for sandwiches and similar applications. They have kidney-bean shape, thinner skin, and shorter shelf life makes commercial use impractical.
  • Oxheart tomatoes can range in size up to beefsteaks, and are shaped liked large strawberries.
  • Pear tomatoes are pear shaped, and are based upon the San Marzano types for richer gourmet paste.
  • Cherry tomatoes are small and round, often sweet tomatoes generally eaten whole in salads.
  • Grape tomatoes, a more recent introduction, are smaller and oblong, a variation on plum tomatoes, and are used in salads.
  • Campari tomatoes are also sweet and noted for their juiciness, low acidity and lack of mealiness. They are bigger than cherry tomatoes, but are smaller than plum tomatoes.
Finally the best variety of tomato for tomato paste happens to be the PLUM TOMATO. It is also known as a processing tomato or paste tomato, is a type of tomato bred for sauce and packaging purposes. They are generally oval or cylindrical in shape, with significantly fewer locules (seed compartments) than standard round tomatoes (usually only two) and a generally higher solid content, making them more suitable for processing.
Plum tomatoes are also sometimes favoured by cooks for use during the tomato off-season, as they are generally considered more amenable to handling and are therefore available in a state closer to ripe than other super market tomatoes.
Varieties (species) commonly available in markets include;

Things you Should Never Say to Solo Female Travelers

When Nigerians see lone female travelers, all sorts of thoughts flood into their mind. The most obvious question they ask themselves is why she is travelling alone? Oftentimes, than not, they frown at solo female travelers. This disposition is often hinged on either ethnicity or religion. The advantages of travelling alone as a female either from Olumirin waterfalls in Osun or the Lekki Leisure Lake in Lagos cannot be overemphasized. In fact, there are now many women travelling alone.  It is important for you to know the things to  say to these women. We are here to points to you some of these things.

You are travelling alone. What about your  friends or boyfriend?

It doesn’t necessarily mean that because a woman is travelling alone she has no friends, family or even a boyfriend. It is always wonderful to have a travel mate while travelling. But, some women may just want an alone time, hence they hit the road for a thrilling vacation on their own. Besides, there is no written rule where her significant other should always travel with her.

Are you not scared?

There are lots of things that happen on the road that can freak out travelers including the female travelling alone. Of course, you will be terrified, but it doesn’t stop her from journeying solo. The fact is that men can't be asked this question. She is aware of the risk before deciding to travel under her own steam. You don’t need to say anything to her.

Be safe

Typical Nigerians don’t hesitate to offer unsolicited advice. Although you may be genuinely concerned about her safety. Every traveler knows that their safety is paramount and not to wander aimlessly. Hence, it is not in your place to tell them.

Are you married?

For single women who are not travelling, they are always asked, are you married? This question pop up from time to time even  if they observe that you are not wearing a wedding band. So, when next you see a female traveler alone, don’t ask if she is married. Women feel uncomfortable with this question.

Don’t you ever get lonely?

It is awesome to always have a travel mate or companion that you can chat or share memorable moments with. It will definitely make you feel better. But since she is on her own, you don't need to worry about being lonely. She will simply enmesh herself in the thrills and frills of the destination thus forgetting that you are alone.

You are so brave!

Yes! Women who travel alone are brave. You may consider it a compliment but women don’t find this statement funny at all. It is like you are eroding their independence, drive to travel and resourcefulness. Only brave women travel but you don’t have to say it to their faces!
