Abstract
The study was designed to investigate
academic dishonesty in higher education in Delta State. To direct the study,
five research questions were stated. The population of the study comprised all
tertiary students in higher institutions in Delta State. The study
adopted the descriptive survey research design and the sample size was one
thousand students randomly sampled from the
Federal University, State University, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. Data for the
study were collected using researcher’s developed questionnaire. In analyzing
the data collected, the researcher used
frequencies, percentages and mean
scores in order to answer the research questions raised. The data analyzed
showed that students in higher institutions
ascribe to the fact that the behavior of their peers during school activities
is generally insincere and dishonest, the most prominent factors that influence
students’ dishonest characteristics in higher institutions are: to make better
grades in examination, to gain admission go through school and graduate and to
incur peers recognition. It also revealed that the major indicators of
students’ dishonest behavior are: cheating in examination, impersonation during
admission and examination, submission of fake credentials for admission or
examination, and general misbehavior in hostels and classrooms, also, female
students were more inclined to the idea that more male students are involved in
dishonest acts and acquire examination materials through improper means, while
their male counterparts rejected these ideas. Finally, it was revealed that
students are of the view that the threats and challenges of students dishonest
behavior is that the credibility of the degree becomes questionable, academic
standards collapses and the institution loses its credibility. Based on
