The importance of communication in any
organization or establishment cannot be overemphasized, as it leads to
realization of organizational set goals, enhances productivity, reduce conflict
as well as increase staff involvement in the organizational activities.
Thus
communication enables the creation of oneness of understanding between those
involved in the communication process, and as such it is important to an
organization for its day-to-day administration (Markin, 1982).
According
to Kolawole and Akinyele (2002), the following are the importance of
communication:
i. It is an aid for management control, as it guides
the achievement and work problems of the subordinates to ensure that they are
in line with the objectives of the organization.
ii. It is an instrument for distributing work and for
directing and coordinating the activities of all categories of staff.
iii.It serve as an effective tool for staff
participation in the decision making process through such methods of suggestion
schemes and departmental meetings. It creates room for creativity, staff
motivation and commitment and leads to the adoption of better decisions which
are made collectively.
iv. Communication helps in developing mutual
understanding and rapport between management and staff, thereby minimizing
areas of conflict and creating industrial peace.
v. Communication creates good public image for an
organization, and this is achieved through the transmission of different types of
information about the organization to external bodies.
vi. The discipline of staff and authority over their
subordinates are enhanced through effective communication and this virtually is
achieved through the issue of queries, warning, orders and instructions.
