Abstract
The study was
designed to investigate the attitudes of student teachers towards teaching
practice in Nigerian universities. To direct the study, three research
questions and three hypotheses were stated, formulated and tested. The study
adopted the survey research design and the population of the study comprised all
the students in the faculty of education in Delta State University, Abraka who
were on teaching practice. The sample size for the study was two hundred (200)
respondents randomly selected from ten purposively sampled schools. Data for
the study were collected using researcher’s developed questionnaire.
In
analyzing the data collected, the researcher used mean and standard deviation
to test the research questions, while t-test statistics was used to test the
hypotheses. The data analyzed revealed that students have a positive attitude
towards teaching practice. There is no significant difference in the mean
ratings of the 300 and 400 level students on the problems facing practical
teaching, there is no significant difference between the strategies for
improving the attitude of student teachers and that of teachers towards
teaching practice and there is no significant difference in the attitude of
student teachers in urban schools and the student teachers in rural schools
towards teaching practice. Based on these findings, some recommendations were
made at the end of the study.
