AN EVALUATION OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING PRACTICE IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS



  Abstract

The study was designed towards evaluating guidance and counselling practice in primary schools in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. To direct the study, four research questions were stated. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design and the population of the study comprised all primary school teachers in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. The sample size was one hundred and fifty respondents randomly sampled from ten schools. Data for the study were collected using researcher’s developed questionnaire.
In analyzing the data collected, the researcher used simple percentage to answer the research questions. The data analyzed revealed that teachers in primary schools in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State understand the concept of guidance and counselling, primary schools in the local government do not have guidance and counselling units or clinics, primary school teachers in the local government area do not render orientation guidance service and finally, there are no instruments used in rendering guidance and counselling services for effective results in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State. Based on these findings, some recommendations were made by the researcher at the end of the study.
