CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Academic performance in its simplest
definition can be refer to how students deal with their studies and how they
cope to accomplish different tasks given to them by their teachers or is the
ability to study and remember facts and being able to communicate your knowledge
verbally or in written form.
According to Philip (2008) academic
performance is the educational goal that is achieved by a student, teacher or
institution achieves over a certain period. This is commonly measured either by
examinations or continuous assessment and the goal may differ from an
individual or institutions to another but there is no general agreement on how
it is best tested or which aspects is most important procedural knowledge such
as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts.
Academic performance is the outcome of
education the extent to which a student, teacher or institutions has achieved
their educational goals (Bossaert, 2006).Student’s academic performance has
been a source of concern to educator, government, parents and the society at
large. This is so because of the great importance that education has on the
national development of the country. All over the country, there is a consensus
of opinion about the fallen standard of education in Delta State (Adebule,
2004). Parents, school administration and the government are in total agreement
that their huge investment on education is not yielding the desire dividend.
Teachers also complain of students’ low performance in both internal and
external examination.
Poor academic performance according to
Aremu (2003) is performance that is adjudged by the examinee or testee and some
significant others as falling below an expected standard. Poor academic
performance has been observed in schools especially among secondary school students
(Adesemomo, 2005).
Aremu (2000) stresses that academic
failure is not only frustrating to the students and parents, its effect are
equally grave on the society in terms of dearth of manpower in all spheres of
the economy and politics. Many factors could be responsible for student’s poor
academic performance in school. Several studies such as Wilson, (1983);Soyibo, (1985);
Berg, (2005) and Adesoji, (2008) reported that students academic performance in
school were rated to be poor as a result of students parental background,
socio-economic status, parent educational level and the home environment, were
identified as factors that influences students academic performance.
