The discrepancy between standard and
non-standard English has propelled eminent scholars and educationist to define
the term error as a systematic performance problems which the learner on his
own is probably not even aware of and certainly cannot correct it on his own
unlike mistake which he may realize and then correct. Ibitoye (2004).
According to Headbloom (2001), defines
error as a systematic deviation from the acceptable form of the language by the
native or non-native speaker or writer. This means that at a certain stage of
learning languages learners produced form of the language which are distinct
from the forms of the target language in one way or the other. When these are
used continuously in speech and in writing, they are regarded as
errors. However, these occur because at this stage, the learner has not mastered
the rules of the language.
An error is a learner language form that
deviates from or violates a target language rules Carla (2014).He further by
saying accuracy is just one of three ways of describing learner language
(accuracy, complexity and fluency).
Accuracy occurs when learner language
conforms to the rules of the target language; error occurs when it does not.
According to Richard and Platt (2008),characterized
error as the wrong use of a language item such word item, grammar in spoken or
writing production at a foreign language learner.
Moreover, error can be seen as the
formation of student’s bad habits when viewed from contrastive analysis
perspective.
According
to Tom Linson and Ellis (2000), when a language learner unconsciously breaks
the unwritten rules of the target language (TL) as a result of faulty learning,
he makes a mistake, and as well breaks the rules of the language as a result of
non-linguistic factors. Thus if a student uses an item correctly many times but
got it wrong once, he has obviously make a mistake. If a student frequently
uses the same item wrongly, then he is almost certainly making errors.
