THE EFFECT OF STUDENT’S PARENTAL BACKGROUND ON STUDENTS, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT
This project was designed to investigate into “the effect of student’s parental background onstudent’s academic performance carried out on some selected secondary schools in Sapele Local Government Area ofDelta State.Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the collection of data. The population of the study comprised of some secondary school students and teachers in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State. One hundred and fifty two (152)
respondents were randomly sampled from five (5) secondary schools to form the sample size for the study. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed questionnaire by the researcher.In analyzing the data collected the researcher used mean and standard deviation statistics to answer the researcher questions stated, while T-test statistics was used to test the hypotheses. Finding from the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the perception of male and female students about the effect of student’s parental background on student’s academic performance. The findings showed that there is a significant difference in the perceptions of the students and teachers about the effect of students’ parental background on student academic performance. Based on these findings, some recommendations were made at the end of the study.
