Drug
is any substance that affects the functioning of living cells, used in medicine
to diagnose, cure, prevent the occurrences of diseases and disorders and
prolong the lives of patients in curable conditions (Djebah, 2006 in Oniyama,
2007). Drug from
the physician view point is any substance an individual use as
medicine to treat any disease or and ailment. Many at times according to Merki
(1990) we use the term “Drug to mean” “Medicine”. Medicines are drugs meant to cure or prevent
diseases and other conditions. A drug is any chemical you take that affects the
way your body works. Alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and nicotine are all drugs. A
drug must be able to pass from your body into your brain. Once inside your
brain, drugs can change the messages your brain cells are sending to each
other, and to the rest of your body. They do this by interfering with your
brain's own chemical signals: neurotransmitters that transfer signals across
synapses. Many people misuse and abuse drugs for the sake of avoidance of cost
which leads to the repeated intake of previously prescribed drugs when similar
signs and symptoms occurs. So many people go across the counter to buy drugs
that are not prescribed, some buy drugs that are recommended by friends that
had similar ailment in the past. Drug abuse and misuse is on and it cuts across
all social strata and positions even among educated people. Drug abuse and
misuse sometimes lead to drug addiction (Oniyama, 2007)
