Scope and Delimitation of the Study - THE EFFECT OF STUDENT’S PARENTAL BACKGROUND ON STUDENTS, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

The scope of the study is focused on the relationship between parental background and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.
1.7          Operational Definition of Terms

Academic Performance
This is refers to a written description of the student’s strength; weakness and learning styles. It is also the accomplishment of a given task measured against present known standard of accuracy or completeness.
Parental Background
There are the characteristic of the family such as parental education attainment, the size of the family, financial status of the parent and the home environment.


CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
1.1.        Introduction
This section reviews all the related literature to the topic under investigation. The review will be discussed under the subheading to highlight the effect of parental background on student’s academic performance.
1.2.        The Concept of Academic Performance
Academic is the characteristic of a school especially one of higher learning. Academics are approach to teaching and learning that focuses on how academic subject (mathematics, science and basic literacy) can be apply to the real world. Further, academics can be viewed as theoretical knowledge supporting practical application
Academics are approach to learning which focuses on motivating and challenging students to connect what they learn with the world they experience and with what interest them (Walker &Jacobetals 2001).
Performance according to Oluwole (2001) is a written description of student’s strength weakness and learning styles or is the accomplishment of a given task measured against present known standard of accuracy or completeness

Academic performance can be defined as excellence in all academic discipline, in class, as well as extracurricular activities. It includes excellence in sporting, behaviour, confidence communication skills, punctuality, assertiveness, art, culture.
