Family size is the total number of
people consisting of parent and their children.
It is worthy to mention that the family
size is one of the factor that determine the academic performance of the
students large family size creates in the upbringing of the their children and
identified the problem of feeding insufficient food, poor clothing,
insufficient fund and disciplinary problem.
Women’s World (2004) asserted that most
parent do not car for their home again. They do not even plan on how many
children they want to have student who disrupt school with extreme problem come
mostly from large family size.
2.8. Theoretical Framework
Behavioural theory was adopted for
this research work. A theory is a practical means or a frame work from
systematic observations and explaining phenomenon in learning theories
therefore attempting to explain and provide understanding of what happens in
the teaching and learning using theories of the human behaviour to explain,
predict and evaluate events in the learner’s life. According to Clark Hull’s
theory of learning is centred on the necessity of reinforcement which is
defined in terms of drive reduction. The behaviour organism is viewed in the
context of homeostatic model seeking equilibrium from “drive force”
The influence of parental resources
on the academic performance of children has received a great deal of attention
in the economic literature. For the UK, Ermisch and Francesconi (2001) and that
students' performance in school is strongly associated with their parents'
educational attainments. According to Haveman and Wolfe (2005), the strong
correlation between parental income and student's scholarly achievements is one
of the major findings in the literature on the determinants of children's
attainments.
However, the fact those children of
parents with high levels of schooling or income perform better than those from
less advantageous family backgrounds does not necessarily imply that the former
exert relatively more effort. As effort and talent constitute the center-pieces
of a meritocratic society, the question of how effort and family background
relate is in our view of great interest.
The family has the potential to
influence a child‘s academic achievement.
This is because it is the first
environment of the child. The initial experience that would mould the child‘s
values, aspirations, emotions, interest and attitudes are offered by the
parents/ family (Okeke, 2009). What the child learns at home and how his family
motivates him towards education contributes to the child‘s success in school
(Essien, 2002). Similarly, Obasi (2009) observed that mere making sure that the
children are prepared for school in the morning is important for the children‘s
successful achievement at school.
Family background is a collective
terminology comprising of social class/status, economic status, family size,
family structure, parents educational level, occupation and other factors
pertaining to family life.
Family background in the context of
this study refers to family structure, parents’ occupation and parents’ level
of education.
