Teachers and Academic Performance

According to Iwuama (2001), a teacher serves as a resource person to students in their educational vocation and personal socio-problem and decision. This research work tends to bring out the reasons why teachers are also factors influencing the academic performance of students as thus:
1.    Most teachers do not have knowledge of their subject matter thereby leading to poor academic performance of students in that area.

2.    Lack of quality teachers has an adverse effect on the academic performance of students.
3.    Teachers extremely dependence on textbooks can lead to a poor academic performance.
4.    Inadequate teaching skill also leads to poor academic performance.
5.    Absence of seminars, workshops, in-service courses for teachers contributes to poor performance of students.
6.    Irregular payment of teachers’ salaries.
In addition, the most crucial inputs of an education system next to students are teachers. In order to render learning effective, the teachers has to ensure conditions which would sustain the attention of the students is conveniently divided into two groups which are subjective and objective attention is determined by interest, dispositions, and prevailing tendencies which the teacher has to exploit. While in the objective, attention is wholly determined by some external factors in the stimulus itself and attracts the organism through sense organ (Ukoha, 2009).
