CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1.
Background of the Study
Learning means an individual’s developing a new
knowledge, skill or attitude as a result of his/her interaction with his/her
knowledge and environment. Learning may happen at any time. However what
concerns the educators is the purposive
learning realized through instructional
efforts. The way we plan the instruction has an effect both on what has been
learnt and how an individual will use the things he/she has learnt. For this
reason, teaching-learning process includes: selections, arrangement, transferring
knowledge in a proper environment and interaction between this information and
the individual. Learning environment means not only the place that instruction
will occur but also the methods, instruments, equipments, and materials which
will be used in transferring the knowledge and guiding the works of
individual’s in learning process (Demirel, Yagci, Seferoglu, 2003).
Mathematics is involved in every discipline, trade and
education. Everyday life activity directly or indirectly uses mathematics for
its effectiveness. In the past, instruction in our school had been taught
without using teaching aids because it was felt that the learner can do well
without their use. But today, or in the modern days, it is not like that, it is
there that this method of imparting knowledge cannot cater for the learners
need adequately.
Mathematics being a subject involving then operation
of figures and different complex formula and also practical course, it is
necessary that it should be taught with relevance teaching aids to make its
teaching and learning effective. The importance of teaching aids in the total
education process cannot be over emphasized.
The Federal Government of Nigeria had adopted
education as an instrument par excellence for effecting national development.
If education has been adopted as the only tool that can solve the
socio-economic problems of Nigeria than the adequate supply of effective teachers
and teaching aids becomes the core of the educational problems because there is
a direct link between the quality of education and the quality of teacher.
The effect of teaching aids in the teaching of
mathematics in schools is an issue that cannot be over looked. This is due to
the single fact that mathematics acts as an integral part of the development of
man, his environment following works and inventions of science and technology.
