INTRODUCTION
1.1.
Background
to the Study
Acquisition
of appropriate skills and competencies make individual function and productive
to himself and the nation at large. Business studies included in the curriculum
is a complete application of the national policy on education which emphasizes
the acquisition of appropriate skills, abilities and competencies both mental
and physical as equipment of the individual to contribute to the development of
his society (MPE, 1981). Therefore, the need to offer business studies
at the school
level as a solid foundation for professionalism is important. Business studies
is a process of instructing a person of the happening during business
transactions in offices, banks, markets and anywhere money changes hand. It is
also a type of education that the skills, developed is used to solutions
problems and be able to have business like attitudes that is useful for the
success in business situations. There is a growing need for business knowledge
in Nigeria because consumers need it in order that they may select wisely from
the vast quantities of goods and services. There is also an increase investment
in securities resulting from the indigenization policy of 1973 and
recapitalization (2011) in the banking and insurance industries. In order to
make these reforms successful and make Nigerian participates actively; there is
the need to acquire enough business knowledge to guide them. Basic business
knowledge should be made accessible to all citizens in the society in order to
make them better consumers of goods and services.
Torine,
(1981) categorized business studies into two major components namely education
for business and education about business. Through his publication people began
to see “education for business as vocational education that is an educational
training programme through which recipients could fit into or be employed in
four major occupational areas namely; book-keeping and accounting jobs,
clerical and general office jobs stenographic and secretariat job distributive
and marketing jobs.
These
four occupational areas are prepared for by going through either public or
private secondary schools, polytechnic, colleges of education and universities.
1.2.
Statement
of Problem
The student’s
performance in business studies in Owheologbo Grammar School Delta State is
made by assessing the attitude of students towards business studies, shortage
of professional teacher’s, lack of deduction on the part of student and
teacher’s inadequate conducive environment and lack of necessary facilities
such as business equipments. This study therefore is structured to finding
solution to these problems with paramount attention on the attitude of
