Utilization of Exclusive Breastfeeding among Nursing Mothers in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State of Nigeria

Exclusive Breast Feeding
CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
1.1 Introduction
Mothers are women who inhabit or perform the role of bearing children, who may or may not be their biological offspring, thus dependent on the context women can be considered mothers by virtue of “having given birth, by raising their children, supplying their ovum for fertilization, or some combination thereon (Wikipedia, 2008).
Women under the third and first categories usually fall under the terms “birth mother” or biological mother’. These mothers wean their children through the milk from mammary gland or commonly called the breast.
The mammary gland is an organ in female mammals that produces milk to feed young offspring. Mammals get their name from the word “mammary“. In human the mammary glands are situated in the breast. The basic component of a matured mammary gland are the aveoli (hollow covities, a few millimeter large) lined with milk-secreting cuboidal colls and surrounded by myoepithedal cells. The milk secreted by alveolar units into the lobule lumen toward the nipple. As the infant begins to suck, the oxytocin-mediated let down reflex ensues and the mother’s milk is secreted-not sucked from the gland into the baby’s mouth. (Lawrence, Ruth A. 2008).
Breast milk is the ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants. To meet their ever evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementing foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond.
The importance and utilization of exclusive breastfeeding cannot be overemphasized as it offers benefits for both mother and baby. It is easy for the baby to digest, which promote more frequent eating due to faster digestion. In most cases breastfeeding is superior to infant formula. (Samour, P.Q and King, K 2012).
No known disadvantage stem from breast feeding. However, extra precautions should be taken or breastfeeding be avoided entirely in circumstances including certain infectious diseases, or use of certain medications. In most cases, it might not be feasible for the mother to continue breastfeeding for baby (W.H.O 2010).
In every major United State city, the nursing mother can readily find a breastfeeding support group a lactation consultant to give her suggestions information and emotional support for this reason mother chances of breastfeeding success are far greater today than ever before. (Hurley, W.L. and J.A. Ford 2002).
Exclusive breastfeeding is the most important step mothers can take for their babies health. At the same time, the months spent in exclusive breastfeeding can be between the most rewarding and fulfilling for the entire family. Today’s busy family, exclusive breastfeeding is the most convenient, cost saving, safest, healthiest and wonderfully effective way to nurture a child’s physical needs as well as emotional needs. (Hurley 2002).

1.2 Statement of Problem

It has been observed that most nursing mothers prefer using infant formular to breast milk due to the fact that they are working labouriously. In some cases not permitted by traditional beliefs so they prefer bottle feeding of their infant with infant formualr. These problems came to symbolize women’s freedom. Formular or bottle feeding believed to represent the modern way of feeding babies and the erroneous belief and ideas that bottle feeding was easier and healthier to exclusive breastfeeding has necessitates this present work.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main reason for studying the utilization of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State was to enable parents (women and men of child bearing age) to understand the wisdom behind exclusive breastfeeding of their infant in the first six (6) months with breast milk it would also indicate to them the need to collectively promote exclusive breastfeeding by women, men, grandmothers, grandfathers and the community at large to have infections free and healthy babies.

1.4 Research Question

The main research question for the study was what is the rate of practice of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State of Nigeria.
Specific questions were the following:
1. What is the awareness of the knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta State of Nigeria?

Ho5: There is no significant difference in mothers settlement pattern and utilization of exclusive breastfeeding.
Ho6: There is no significant difference in religion affiliation of mothers and the utilization of exclusive breastfeeding.
