2.2 Concept of Home
The concept of home is been defined in so many ways. According to the concise dictionary, a home is a place where one live or an institution for people needing professional care. A home is generally a place that is close to the heart of the owner and can become a prized possession. People may become homesick when they leave their home over an extended period of time. A home according to Wikipedia is a dwelling place used as a permanent or semi-permanent residence for an individual family, household or several families in a tribe. Larger groups may live in a nursing home, children’s home.
Convent (2010) refers to the home as a primary social group and the smallest institution in the society. Popular saying goes like this, “there is no place like home”, East or west, home is the best.2.3 Academic Performance
Academic performance is how well student are doing in school. Galiher (2006) and Darling (2005) among others have examined the causes of poor academic performance among secondary school students. Some of the factors identified are intellectual ability, poor study habit, achievement motivation, lack of vocational goals, low self-esteem, low socio-economic status of the family poor family structure and anxiety. The consequences of these include indiscipline in schools and low level of educational standard. Structure of the home can be directed to whether the home is stable or broken. Harb and El-Shaarawi (2009) found that the most important factor with positive effect on student’s performance is student’s competence in English. If the students have strong communication skills and have strong grip on English, it increases the performance of the students.
Amitava Raychaudhuri et al.., (July, 2010) state that the environment of the home in which a child is reared can advance or hinder wholesome personality adjustment. Family relationships also determine in large measure the young person’s developing attitudes towards home and family life. They also ascertained that one of the most important influences upon the adolescent is the emotional climate of the family. Some families are characterized by a prevailing mood of gaiety, joy, optimism and happiness. Other families reflect a climate of fear, depression, criticism and hostility which has a negative effect on children.
Adetunji and Oladeji (2011) submit that the environmental influence as a major factor in the development of student or a child in most cases not conducive for studying. It is in the light of this that made some parents to prefer their children to go to boarding school for proper discipline.
Also the happier the parents and the more positive the home status, the more beneficial is the effect on growing children which will in turn bring out a relatively good performance academically. The best adjusted children are those who grow in happy homes where adolescents and both parents spend pleasurable time together. A Daily Sketch publication on “causes and cures of poor performance at West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE), in 2010 identified and categorized problems of teachers, problems of inadequate facilities in the school, problems of government policies and low funding of the educational sector (Ajila and Olutola, 2007).
2.4 Concept of Education
Education to educators is the process through which peoples abilities and talents are developed. According to Sharma (2008), Education is the art or process of impacting or acquiring knowledge and habits through institution or study. Adeyemi (2010), perceive Education as the art or science of transmitting culture, norms, traditions, values and ethics of a society from one generation to its succeeding generation. Also Wikipedia defines education as the largest sense of any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.
Education can be simplified further as the act or process that leads a person to better understanding of the situations in his life. It’s also the process of imparting and acquiring knowledge and training to grow one’s intellectual and mental capabilities, so as to make mature decisions in different situations. It is the learning process by which any knowledge can be obtained (Hunbbel Meer 2010).
Whatever definition you may find interesting or accurate, one thing must be noted that the gist of all the above explanations for education lies in the passive idea of “Being educated”. The process of being educated is really far more precious and prestigious than only monetary terms. To this end, Education can be seen as an act of giving intellectual or moral instruction to a child or group of learners for the betterment of their characters in the society.
