Chapter One
Introduction
Background of the Study
Over the last twenty years
entrepreneurship education has experienced unprecedented growth. This can be
seen in the growth of positions, organizations, research and publications
devoted to the area of entrepreneurship. Among entrepreneurship researchers,
the role of entrepreneurship education has been recognized as one of the
crucial factors that help youths to understand and foster an entrepreneurial
attitude.
The impact of education on the creation
of future entrepreneurs and the link between training and the success of the
new ventures has been subjected to academic discussion. Students who elected to
take a single course in entrepreneurship were more likely to start their own
business. A review of a graduate enterprise program in the U.K. suggests that
the programme provided an incentive to more than half of the participants to
start their own business sooner than intended. This initiative had a moving
impact on the graduates founding activities which motivated their interest,
making an impact on their subsequent career choice.
In 1989, Wychham examined the
characteristics of university-based entrepreneurial education programmes and
suggested that universities make a good location for entrepreneurial skill
support systems. However, most universities were established mainly to prepare
students for careers in large organizations. A growing number of universities
are getting involved in entrepreneurship education, research and publication.
Levie (1998) found that universities in the U.S., U.K., and Australia offer
courses in the study of entrepreneurship. This may help create awareness among
students that entrepreneurship is an alternative as a career possibility.
Entrepreneurship education encourages
graduates to start their own business stating that the course had a very large
effect on their career decision. Joseph Schumpeter (1975) added that the
entrepreneur is the motive behind capitalist development. Entrepreneurship
spirit pervades all economies (though more with free market or capitalist
economies) and it is considered the bedrock of modern economic development
through innovation. Given this background, it is thus, necessary to examine the
Nigerian students’ choice of entrepreneurship education: A case study of Uvwie
Local Government Area of Delta State. This is the main focus of this research
work
