SoundsYou Can Never Miss When Travelling Around The City

Lagos State
Lagos like every other cosmopolitan city have things that are peculiar to them. The over 20 million Lagosians running around to earn a living on streets/markets and in offices, the shenanigans of the danfos or passengers/police and the pomp of the nightlife. However, one distinct thing you cannot miss is the sounds of Lagos. These sounds can be annoying at times but if you are a newbie in the city or a staylite, you can never miss it.

 The Generator Noise

Generator has become an important feature in the life of Lagosians due to unstable power supply. The sound or noise runs 24 hours in homes, offices, markets, hospitals, hotels, and even government offices. Except something drastic is done about power, the sound of generators will continue to boom in the lives of not only Lagosians but Nigerians.

The voice of the early morning preacher

Nigerians are very religious. Hence, we go all out to preach the gospel and win souls for ‘God’. To achieve this, the Mosque invite Muslim faithful to prepare for prayer while the Christians share the word of God on the streets as early as 5 am. On other days, the loud singing, chanting and drum beats in churches and mosques will no doubt get your attention. Religion is a sensitive issue in Nigeria. So, efforts by government to regulate this ‘noise’ has had little or no impact.

Shoe Makers in Lagos

The Wakaabout beat of the shoemaker
The shoemaker with his small box which contains his tools move around the nooks and crannies of Lagos calling persons who want to mend their shoes to bring them out. He doesn’t make the announcement with his voice, he simply uses a stick to beat his box. Lagosians who hear that sound know that the cobbler is around!

The aggressive bus conductor calling passengers

Oshodi! Ikoyi!! Lekki!!! If you are on Lagos roads, you will be used to the bus conductors inviting different passengers to board their buses to different Lagos destinations. They shout at the top of their voice. If you are not careful, you may be hassled to enter the wrong bus.

The booming music from roadside loudspeakers

Strategically placed at bus stops, parks and markets to get noticed, the seller plays music on giant loudspeakers in other to attract potential customers or buyers.  It remains to be seen if this music actually gets the attention of customers and translates into sales.

In Swartz protest, Anon hacks U.S. site, threatens leaks

This is what the United States Sentencing Commission's hacked home page looked like.

In response to the death of tech activist Aaron Swartz, hacktivist collective Anonymous hacked a U.S. government Web site related to the justice system and posted a screed saying it would begin leaking a cache of government documents if the justice system is not reformed.
The group hacked the Web site for the United States Sentencing Commission late Friday, posting a message about what it's calling "Operation Last Resort," along with a set of downloadable encrypted files it said contain sensitive information. The sentencing commission is the caretaker of the guidelines for sentencing in U.S. federal courts.
"Two weeks ago today, a line was crossed," the group's statement reads. "Two weeks ago today, Aaron Swartz was killed. Killed because he faced an impossible choice. Killed because he was forced into playing a game he could not win -- a twisted and distorted perversion of justice -- a game where the only winning move was not to play."
The recent suicide of Swartz, a proponent of freely accessible information, has been blamed by some on what they say were outrageously aggressive efforts on the part of the U.S. Attorney in Massachusetts to punish Swartz for his alleged theft of millions of articles from a database of academic journals. The 26-year-old Swartz, who struggled with bouts of depression, had been charged with 13 felonies and threatened with decades in prison and fines exceeding $1 million. U.S. Attorney Carmin Ortiz says Swartz's lawyers were also offered a plea bargain in which he'd plead guilty and serve perhaps six months.
Anonymous encouraged its followers to download the files on the hacked site, a set of nine downloads named after the U.S. Supreme Court's nine justices and collectively referred to by the hacking collective as a "warhead."
"Warhead-US-DOJ-LEA-2013.AEE256 is primed and armed. It has been quietly distributed to numerous mirrors over the last few days and is available for download from this website now. We encourage all Anonymous to syndicate this file as widely as possible."
The group wouldn't specify what, exactly, is in the files, saying only that "the contents are various and we won't ruin the speculation by revealing them. Suffice it to say, everyone has secrets, and some things are not meant to be public. At a regular interval commencing today, we will choose one media outlet and supply them with heavily redacted partial contents of the file."
The contents of the encrypted files can apparently be accessed only with a decryption key, and Anonymous said it didn't necessarily want to provide that key to its followers -- it mentioned "collateral damage" as a result of any leaks and said: "It is our hope that this warhead need never be detonated." But the group said the U.S. government must begin acting on reforms to the justice system suggested by the system's critics, and in spelling out its demands more specifically, it mentioned plea bargaining and suggested the overhaul of legislation such as the mid-1980s antihacking law titled the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

FG orders return of toxic wastes containers to U.K

Lagos – The Federal Government has ordered that the toxic waste laden containers on board MV Marivia Monrovia be shipped back to the port of origin in the U.K. Dr Ngeri Benebo, the Director General of National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), disclosed to reporters on Thursday.
The Liberian flagged container ship with gross tonnage of 23, 652, which berthed at the Tin-Can Island Port on Wednesday, was intercepted by the Nigeria Customs Service and NESREA. Some containers in the ship were laden with used television sets, used computers, used CPUs, used DVDs, used microwaves, used pressing irons and used stereo sets.
Benebo said that sending the consignment back to the port of origin was in conformity with the provisions of Harmful Wastes Act, promulgated after the Koko waste saga. “We are sending the e-wastes back to the port of origin,’’the DG said.

Dr Benebo said
that the agency was going to work according to Nigerian laws on the matter, adding that the agency would do exactly what the laws said. The director general promised that the vessel owners would be heavily sanctioned in line with the laws of the land. “The captain wanted to deceive Nigerians.
“When he realised that there was a red alert on the containers, he lied that the containers were not destined for Nigeria and that they were meant for another country, which was completely false. “ I conferred with the Comptroller General of Customs, who said that once it is manifested as Nigeria, the containers must be dropped and inspected in Nigeria,’’
Inspection of the containers, as directed by the comptroller-general, was carried out by officials of the NPA, NIMASA, the Customs Service and other security agencies. Benebo said that it was discovered that the containers were meant to be disposed off in Nigeria. According to her, Nigeria will never be used as a dumping ground and “we will resist any attempt by any country to make Nigeria dumping ground”.
Benebo said that agency acted on a tip off to track down the toxic contents in the ship. The names of the importers are Messrs Moronuk David and Bonik Investment. NAN reports that this is not the first attempt to dump toxic wastes in Nigeria.
The first attempt was in 1988 when a shipment of over 3,500 tonnes of toxic wastes from Italy was imported to Koko Port, a coastal community in the old Bendel State. In April 2010, the NCS arrested and detained a Maersk Line vessel, MV Nashiville, laden with toxic wastes (lead batteries classified as Basel code A1180 and broken televisions.
In June 2010, NCS also arrested and detained a ship, Mv Gumel, in Lagos port for bringing eight containers with materials suspected to be toxic wastes. Also, in October 2010, a vessel, MV Vera D, carrying three containers laden with toxic black and white television sets, was detained at the Tin-Can Port, Lagos. The toxic-laden containers were sent back to the port of origin in the U.S. In Dec. 2012, NESREA impounded four containers of used electronics described as “e-wastes” in Apapa port. (NAN)

Eko 2012: Ondo swimmer wins gold, battles for life

The atmosphere was similar to what fans experience at  international champion-ships. Ambiance was superb and the crowd enjoyed it and showed this with ceaseless cheering the moment the swimmers took the plunge.
The swimming poolarena was full last night at the ongoing Sports Festival in Lagos. Fans even gate-crashed  for seats.
Lagos had a fan club that produced soothing music for their swimmigers and Ondo’s Ibukun Adamolekun benefited from it and thesupport of fans whose cheers appeared to be inspiring all in the pool.
In the beginning of the final of 200 m Butterfly for women, Ibukun took a comfortable lead at the first and second laps.

She appeared to be coasting to the gold even on the third lap. But Emutimu Duke of Delta gave her the chase of her life and alsmost caught up with her in the final lap.  Emutimu surprised all and she was cheered on.
But Ibukun would rather die than lose the gold that once appeared an easy one before the hot chase. She gave her all and still won it but it was not as easy as she impressed in the beginning.
She was exhaused and while celebrating her hard earned gold she saw herself gasping for breath and was falling back into the pool before she was quickly rescued. She signaled danger and called for help.
She collapsed and the medical team battled to revive the fanited swimmer. The arena turned quiet and people prayed that tragedy be averted. After about five minutes, Ibukun was revived and the fans cheered the gold winner as she was taken to the medical room for further attention.
“It was an interesting event’’, veteran swimming coach Steve Onyeacholam said. ‘’If I went fast early I would have probably beaten her but I was cautious not to brun out early but by the time I realised the gap was wide.
It was late for me to catch up’’, regretted Delta’s Emutimi. More than one hour after the event, officials were yet to release times of the swimmers, a low point for them.
‘’You are causing me tension’’,  replied an official in charge of recording  the times when asked to supply times recorded  by swimmers in the events.

Boko Haram member sends letter offering dialogue

Gunmen, yesterday, launched an attack on the headquarters of the  Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Abuja believed to be holding suspected Islamist extremists, killing two officers and leading to the escape of 30 detainees.
Police authorities, however, claimed to have re-arrested 25 of the 30 escapees and said no one being held on “terror-related charges” was freed.
The attack on the Special Anti-Robbery Squad compound in the pre-dawn hours resulted in a gun battle, with police claiming to have repelled the assailants and arrested two of them.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. The raid was similar to others carried out by Islamist extremist group, Boko Haram.
However, a statement signed by Force Spokesman, CSP Frank Mba reads: “In the early hours of today, November 26, 2012, at about 2am, unknown gunmen in large numbers attacked the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Federal Territory Police Command.

Policemen on duty responded swiftly and engaged the gunmen in a gun battle that lasted for some minutes, at the end of which the gunmen were successfully repelled.
“However, in the confusion that ensued, about 30 suspects in the detention facilities of SARS broke out of the cells and attempted to escape.  Tactical and coordinated efforts to re-arrest the fleeing suspects yielded instant result.
So far, 25 of the suspects have been re-arrested, while five suspects originally being held in relation to robbery related offences are currently at large.  Two Policemen died during the operation while two of the attackers have been arrested.
“It needs to be emphasized here that no suspect held for terror related charges, escaped from SARS detention facilities.  No explosive or IED-related materials were used in the botched attack”.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has personally visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation. He has equally ordered a high-powered investigative panel headed by a Senior Police Officer to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Members of Boko Haram have carried out scores of attacks in northern and centralNigeria, including police stations and sometimes with the intent of freeing jailed members.
A visit to the scene, revealed that the main gate outside the police unit was heavily guarded. There were two armoured vehicles, six police trucks and more than a dozen armed policemen.
It was not immediately possible to determine whether the complex had suffered damage.
On Friday, the military offered hundreds of thousands of dollars in reward for information leading to the capture of leaders of Boko Haram in a statement that listed 19 alleged senior members of the group.
The rewards ranged from N50 million ($317,000, 245,000 euros) for the suspected leader, Abubakar Shekau, to N10 million for various Boko Haram “commanders”.

Gaza Rockets From Iran's Technology, Iranian General Says

Iran has supplied Hamas in Gaza with the technology to "quickly" produce longer-range missiles on their own without needing direct shipments, said a report Wednesday that quoted the head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard. The comments by Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari offer some of the clearest insights on Iran's weapons support for Hamas, whose Iranian-engineered Fajr-5 missiles have struck near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during weeklong battles with Israel.
"Gaza is under siege, so we cannot help them. The Fajr-5 missiles have not been shipped from Iran. Its technology has been transferred and (the missiles are) being produced quickly," Jafari was quoted as saying by the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

Iran has repeatedly denied it directly supplied Hamas with the Fajr-5. The ISNA report gave no further details on the level of missile know-how sent to Gaza or the channels used.
Israel charges that Iran sends weapons, including rockets, to Gaza through a network of smuggling tunnels under the 15-kilometer (9-mile) border between Gaza and Egypt.
Iran also backs the anti-Israel faction Hezbollah in Lebanon, which fired thousands of rockets into Israel during a monthlong 2006 war.
Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, meanwhile, said his country was "honored" that Iran could help Palestinians with "material and military aspects." He did not elaborate.
He criticized Arab countries for failing to help arm Hamas and other Palestinian group. "The Palestinian nation does not need speeches and meetings. Arab countries should send military aid," he was quoted as saying by the semiofficial Fars news agency.
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei also chided other Muslim nations for not rallying behind Gaza in the latest showdown with Israel.

"Some of them sufficed with words, and some others did not condemn" Israel, Khamenei said, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.
Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Gaza over the past week in an operation it says is meant to stop daily rocket salvos by Gaza militants at Israel.
Iran and Israel are bitter enemies, and the two nations are locked in a deepening dispute over Iran's nuclear program. The West and others fear Iran could eventually produce nuclear weapons, and Israel has left open the option of staging a military strike at its nuclear facilities.
Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes such as power generation and cancer treatment.

Ex-staff challenge Nokia with new Finnish smartphone

A group of ex-Nokia employees who quit over the company’s decision to abandon the planned MeeGo operating system in favour of Windows plan to launch their own smartphone next year, their start-up said on Wednesday.
The company Jolla, which counts four former Nokia engineers and directors among its five founders, presented its new operating system Sailfish in Helsinki and co-founder and chairman of the board Antti Saarnio promised to deliver “the world’s best smartphone” by mid-2013.
“Jolla’s own phone will be a high-end premium product,” Saarnio told AFP.
In addition, the company will offer Sailfish products to retailer and operator partners for the medium-price range.

Jolla’s target and key market is China “because this is the most
dynamic market at the moment in the smartphone industry and the industry there is looking for different alternatives to make smartphones.”
The US market is not part of Jolla’s business plan, but Europe and North Africa are, Saarnio said.
Jolla — which in Finnish means both a small sailboat and a life boat — was started a little over a year ago, shortly after Nokia decided to go with the Windows OS.
“Most of our team was at that time working in the MeeGo unit and we were so passionate about MeeGo and felt it was so competitive that we wanted to continue the development and start a company,” Saarnio explained.
Today the company employs 50 people and is hiring each month.
Jolla has already received financing of more than 10 million euros ($12.8 million) from private Finnish and international investors and Finnish state funding.
“This is enough for developing and commercialising the product, both hardware and software,” said Saarnio, who himself still uses a Nokia N9 mobile phone.
“In the spring we intend to raise about 20 million euros for growth financing,” he said.
Two distribution deals are already in place, with the largest smartphone retailer in China, D.Phone, and the Finnish operator DNA.
The phone’s physical design will be revealed early next year.
Saarnio said the Jolla phones would offer “multi-tasking and true user interface differentiation … freeing people from opening and closing applications, making the use of the smartphones much more efficient and letting them tailor their screens much more than others.”
The Sailfish OS will also run on tablets, he said.

University of Abuja Shut Down Following Violent on Students Protest

For the second time this year, authorities of the University of Abuja have shut down the institution following students’ protest.

Despite the fact that second semester
examination was already underway, the students’ protest which led to major roads and huge traffic congestion resulted in the institution being shut down
According to Sahara Reporters, the students went on a rampage to protest the non-accreditation of some of their courses.

The accreditation panel of the National University Commission had recently refused to certify some of the courses being run by the university.

Some of the courses are in the Faculty of Engineering, Agriculture and Sciences. The protest, which commenced at 6:00 AM, was started by students from the Faculty of Engineering.

Many students soon joined in blocking the main gate of the school to protest harsh conditions of education and general mismanagement of the university by officials the students regard as incompetent and irresponsible.

Some students said the university is in poor condition as inhabitants of the girls hostel lack of water supply which forces them to fetch water from the boys hostel.

Student leaders of the protest said the school is also bedeviled with overpopulated classes, cancelled lectures, lack of library facilities and lecture halls as well as the refusal of the school authorities to allow for independent student union elections.

The protests quickly spread as several students took to the street just as some of their colleagues began sitting for their first semester examinations, which ought to start on Monday.

The protest led to the cancellation of examination in various classes slated for the day as lecturers and invigilators abandoned the two campuses to safety.

It would be recalled that in April, the management of the institution closed the University after a violent protest by students resulted in a breakdown of law and order in the school community.

Getting to know who you are and the importance you could be with just a few monent of close talk with a good mentor.

www.facebook.com

The quality of a man is deeply rooted on the sacrifices he makes towards reveling the potentials of another that is lying deep in them.
The keywords here are sacrifices, and deep
You must be ready to commit yourself time wise, strength and otherwise in the notion to reveal to others the stuff there are made. In this contemporary world today, nothing is impossible, it can be difficult but not impossible.
Deeply rooted has to do with you persevering to the end no matter how rough and slippery the road will be, Always  no that it's the road to success and as your helping to build others, your building yourself for a better tomorrow to your children and to your children children.
This blog is actually to strengthen my colleagues in IT who might be having some issues in their place of attachment. don't give up. note this: Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. And i strongly believe that 70% of us has a very right mental attitudes.
According to V.C. White, he said and i quote: The man who makes a success of an important venture never wails for the crowd. He strikes out for himself. It takes nerve, it takes a great lot of grit; but the man that succeeds has both. Anyone can fail. The public admires the man who has enough confidence in himself to take a chance. These chances are the main things after all. The man who tries to succeed must expect to be criticized. Nothing important was ever done but the greater number consulted previously doubted the possibility. Success is the accomplishment of that which most people think can't be done.
The place or the environment you are today is not a determinant factor for who you will be tomorrow but certainly your mind set. who do you want to be? No body makes you inferior without your permission.
So many great men today started very trash if you must know.
