Social and Economic Policy

In a bid to develop the industrial sector of the economy, a policy was enacted. This gave rise to the impact substitution strategy for industrial development. This has had several geographical implications. For example, since most of the industrial inputs were imported there has been a high tendency of concentrating industries in such part cities as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri thereby leading to geographical disparities in the distribution of economic activities.

Policy on Natural Resources Development

Nature provides many potential resources, but which of these are eventually developed in what manner and to what extent, depends very much on the government policies and actions. It is the aim of every government to harness and develop the available natural resources in its area of justification. The ideal thing would be for each government to achieve even development of all the available resources. But by its policies, a government may unknowingly promote the development of certain resources to the detriment of others. An over concentration on a few resources may have an adverse effect on the sustained yield of those resources and the stability of the ecosystem as a whole.

Geography as it affects Government Policies

Though it does not a present, constitute separate fields of study in the Nigerian school geography, government policy is significantly implied in a number of ways or topics, particularly in the human geography section.

In the modern system of government characterized by centrally planned political control of the socio-economic order government policies, decisions and actions have great repercussions on geographic government policies are continually changing with the unpredicted minds of men. Thus, the landscape in any are at any given time is the result of not only of current but also of past decision and actions in other factor in the geography of any country.

Geographical Knowledge and Societal Welfare

Geography is one subject which many people mostly non-geographers claim to know about almost everything. Such claims seem to arise from certain exposures to geographical knowledge and teaching at early education at the primary and secondary schools.

The creation of a happy society is one of the aims of any government, and has indeed been the aim of successive Nigerian governments who since 1970 have expressly stated this in the development plans (National Policy on Education).

The role of the geographers and the geographical knowledge in national development has sometimes been nationally appreciated by government. According to Okafor et al (1983), in recent years, the federal government set up experts panel that includes geographers to advice them on such issues as food production and moral development.

Present State of Geography

Geography as a school subject has for some decades now been facing serious challenges in virtually all countries of the world. All effort to win back the honoured position of the “mother of today’s disciplines” still continues unabated in virtually all countries of the world, Nigeria inclusive.

Bola (1988) stated that the problem with geography is the way the subject has been taught over the years. The challenges and problems faced by geography in Nigeria and other developing countries are even more serious. The situation is worsened by the peculiar problems of lack of adequate staff, either in terms of quality and quantity, lack of incentives and conviction on the part of the available staff, the undue emphasis on the acquisition of certificates rather than on the quality of education.

In the world over, it is one of the subjects studied from the secondary school level to the higher educational level. The recognition of geography in Nigeria is not new because it has for a long time now occupied a significant position in the secondary education curriculum, being taught even in most remote village schools.

Understanding the value of geography, the federal ministry of education has insisted on geography gaining a significant position in the school syllabus all over Nigeria. The subject therefore is taught in all institutions beginning from the secondary school through the tertiary institutions. The study of geography has suffered a lot of setbacks of which the greatest is the inadequate teachers in secondary schools.
