Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Why I sacked my Experts - Dangote

Dangote Group, one of Nigeria’s largest private firms has begun the steady cutback of employees as it has been hit with problems relating to the economic crisis in the country. The first set of 48 staff were disengaged last week consisting of 36 foreign staff and 12 Nigerians.

Though there was no official of the group willing to speak on the matter yet, Punch reports that the decision to sack the workers was not unconnected with the current high cost of running business in the country occasioned by the unavailability of foreign exchange and the unprecedented hike in the Naira to dollar exchange rate.

This was especially true in the case of the foreigners who were being paid in foreign exchange, as the Naira’s free fall in value, coupled with the unavailability of forex made it increasingly difficult for the company to pay the foreigners. The Nigerians were reportedly laid off due to disciplinary issues.

Probably what will be more disconcerting to workers of the company is the fact that this is not likely to be the end of the mass sack in the company. According to a letter signed by the CEO of the group, Aliko Dangote, there is a strong possibility that more will be sacked.

“This year has been a very challenging year for us as a business. The unavailability of foreign exchange coupled with an unprecedented hike in the exchange rate has resulted in increased costs across the organization.

This called for a proper review and adjustment of our costs across board to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the deployment of our factors of production in a bid to eliminate redundancies that we know exist, which resulted in some tough decisions, which means losing staff, including some of our colleagues.

On Friday, October 14, 2016, we began the process of staff cutbacks as it is imperative to review our human capital deployment for the required cutbacks that would ensure efficiency and eliminate redundancies in the allocation of human resources.

This first phase of this exercise involved the cutback of 36 expatriate staff across the Dangote Cement Plc and Dangote Industries Limited, and 12 local staff members in Dangote Industries Limited.”

The sack of employees of the company was not entirely unforeseen as the CEO, Aliko Dangote had, according to a recent index released by Bloomberg, lost $5.4 billion due to the depreciation of the Naira and the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN’s decision to ration dollars to stem huge capital outflows.

TAXONOMY OF TOMATO

TAXONOMY OF TOMATO
Tomato belongs to the family Solanaceae (also known as night shade family), genus Solanum, sub family Solanoidaeae and tribe Solaneae. (Taylor., 1986). The genus include a small collection of cultivated and wild species like S. lycopersicum Milli, wild species like S.peruvianum, S.hirsum, S. glanduosam, S. pinpinellifolium, S.
cheesemannii. Taxonomists recently changed the name as Solanum lycopersicon. The tomato is native to Central and South America. It is a popular and versatile food. In tomato only fruits can be eaten since the leaves contain toxic alkaloids. The cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicon, is the second most consumed vegetable worldwide and a well studied crop in terms of genetics, genomics, and breeding. The tomato is a perennial plant but usually grown as an annual plant. It is reported that the tomato plant can reach up to 3metre. The stems are somewhat weak and often require staking or support such as a tomato cage. Branching at the base is monopodial, becomes sympodial higher up. The tomato leaves are 10 to 30cm long and unevenly imparipinnate compound with variously indented or lobed margins. Both the stems and the leaves are slightly rough and fuzzy. The inflorescence of tomato bare small yellow flowers has five pointed lobes on the corolla. The tomato fruits are fleshy berries green when unripe and become deep red and shiny when ripe. The tomato cultivars differ a great deal in size, shape and colour. There are also yellow, orange, green and brown varieties of fruits. The shape can vary from small cherry tomatoes, pear shaped tomatoes to large irregular shaped beefy tomatoes. The shape, size and colour of tomato decide their market value. Number of processed items prepared on large scale for consumption as well as for export using different varieties of tomato.

PRODUCTION OF TOMATO

Previously tomatoes were grown only during favourable season, but nowadays tomatoes are grown round the year. Because of its economic importance, area under cultivation is increasing every year. The estimated area and production of tomato for India are about 3,50,000 hectares and 53,00,000 tons respectively. Worldwide tomato production in 2005 totaled 29.9 million metric tons and production for the 2005/2006 season in Europe totaled 10.6 million metric tons.
Tomato is the second largest vegetable crop in India. The average productivity of tomato in our country (Nigeria) is merely 158 q/ha while its productivity in USA is 588 q/ha, in Greece 498 q/ha, in Italy 466 q/ha and 465 q/ha in Spain. Ten most promising states of India for tomato crop have been identified and utilized for further study on various aspects of tomato crop.
Bihar State in India is at leading position followed by UP and Orissa in terms of area under tomato crop. The maximum production and productivity have been showed by UP followed by Karnataka, Punjab, West Bengal and Assam. India’s export of value added tomato products was around 758.6 tons, which included 41tons of canned tomato products, 38 tons tomato juice valued at and 595 tons ketch-up in the year 2005-2006. This accounts for than thousand crores to the Indian economy even with least price like three rupees per kilo. This significant achievement in tomato production is possible due to the development of high yielding varieties/hybrids, breeding for biotic and abiotic stresses, resistance and heterosis breeding.

SPECIES OF TOMATO FRUIT

There are around 7500 tomato varieties grown for various purposes. Heirloom tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among home gardeners and organic producers, since they tend to produce more interesting and flavourful crops at the cost of disease resistance and productivity. (Allen,. 2008)
In 1973, Israeli scientists developed the world’s first long shelf-life commercial tomato varieties. (Yissum, 2013)
Tomato varieties are roughly divided into several categories , based mostly on shape and size.
  • Slicing or globe tomatoes are the usual tomatoes of commerce, used for a wide variety of processing and fresh eating.
  • Beefsteak tomatoes are large tomatoes often used for sandwiches and similar applications. They have kidney-bean shape, thinner skin, and shorter shelf life makes commercial use impractical.
  • Oxheart tomatoes can range in size up to beefsteaks, and are shaped liked large strawberries.
  • Pear tomatoes are pear shaped, and are based upon the San Marzano types for richer gourmet paste.
  • Cherry tomatoes are small and round, often sweet tomatoes generally eaten whole in salads.
  • Grape tomatoes, a more recent introduction, are smaller and oblong, a variation on plum tomatoes, and are used in salads.
  • Campari tomatoes are also sweet and noted for their juiciness, low acidity and lack of mealiness. They are bigger than cherry tomatoes, but are smaller than plum tomatoes.
Finally the best variety of tomato for tomato paste happens to be the PLUM TOMATO. It is also known as a processing tomato or paste tomato, is a type of tomato bred for sauce and packaging purposes. They are generally oval or cylindrical in shape, with significantly fewer locules (seed compartments) than standard round tomatoes (usually only two) and a generally higher solid content, making them more suitable for processing.
Plum tomatoes are also sometimes favoured by cooks for use during the tomato off-season, as they are generally considered more amenable to handling and are therefore available in a state closer to ripe than other super market tomatoes.
Varieties (species) commonly available in markets include;

Research Design for Pubertal Experiences and Menstrual Knowledge of Adolescent Secondary School Girls

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study was designed to evaluate “Pubertal Experiences and Menstrual Knowledge of Adolescent Secondary School Girls in Abakaliki Metropolis”; using a standard questionnaire

EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENT ON PUBERTY/ MENSTRUAL HYGIENE

The school environment refers to aspects of the school or learning space that affect both the physical and psychosocial well-being of students, teachers and other school staff. To promote psychosocial well-being, the school should be a place where all are free from fear and exploitation, where codes against misconduct exist and are enforced (Vernon et al., 2003). For physical well-being, the school should be a place where all individuals are free from danger, disease, physical harm or injury; where sufficient safe water and sanitation facilities are provided; and where physical structures (buildings, paths and latrines) are sound, welcoming and secure (Vernon et al., 2003).

Breaking News: JAMB introduces flexible cut-off marks for admission seekers

Jamb Cutoff Mark
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced flexible cut-off marks to expand admissions to tertiary institutions of learning in the country.

Jamb 2016 Cutoff Mark

Oloyede noted that the Board will continue to get involve in admission matters in a way that reflects national concern in a season of change, devoid of corruption. This, he stated has already received the blessings of the Education Minister and other education stakeholders across the length and breadth of the country.

His words: “Let me in this connection, address the issue of the minimum national cut-off mark which is normally decided at the Policy Meetings. By way of information, the Policy Meeting is one that comprises the Honourable Minister of Education as the Chairman, the Heads of Regulatory Bodies in the Education Sector such as NUC, NBTE, NABTEB, NCCE, the Heads of Tertiary Institutions, the Board and other Stakeholders. It was at this meeting that a decision of 180 as the 2016 National cut-off mark was reached. However, many Institutions, though part of the decision, have expressed concern on their inability to effect this cut-off mark as they are finding it difficult to fill a reasonable percentage of their quota if the rule is strictly applied ….”

For the ex-Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin, the inability of some institutions to fill their admission quota due to the strict implementation of the 180 minimum cut-off mark is a disservice to the nation’s quest for expansion of education as a tool of change and development. “As a Board, we have studied the trend of admissions and have come up with a finding that hardly do the institutions collectively fill their quota annually. Indeed, in some cases, up to 50% of approved quota is wasted particularly by upright institutions which do not circumspect the rule. Unfortunately, a large number of institutions flagrantly disregarded the cut-off and many other policies. Yet they found a way to eventually regularize the illegal admissions through corrupt process,” the JAMB boss further added.

SoundsYou Can Never Miss When Travelling Around The City

Lagos State
Lagos like every other cosmopolitan city have things that are peculiar to them. The over 20 million Lagosians running around to earn a living on streets/markets and in offices, the shenanigans of the danfos or passengers/police and the pomp of the nightlife. However, one distinct thing you cannot miss is the sounds of Lagos. These sounds can be annoying at times but if you are a newbie in the city or a staylite, you can never miss it.

 The Generator Noise

Generator has become an important feature in the life of Lagosians due to unstable power supply. The sound or noise runs 24 hours in homes, offices, markets, hospitals, hotels, and even government offices. Except something drastic is done about power, the sound of generators will continue to boom in the lives of not only Lagosians but Nigerians.

The voice of the early morning preacher

Nigerians are very religious. Hence, we go all out to preach the gospel and win souls for ‘God’. To achieve this, the Mosque invite Muslim faithful to prepare for prayer while the Christians share the word of God on the streets as early as 5 am. On other days, the loud singing, chanting and drum beats in churches and mosques will no doubt get your attention. Religion is a sensitive issue in Nigeria. So, efforts by government to regulate this ‘noise’ has had little or no impact.

Shoe Makers in Lagos

The Wakaabout beat of the shoemaker
The shoemaker with his small box which contains his tools move around the nooks and crannies of Lagos calling persons who want to mend their shoes to bring them out. He doesn’t make the announcement with his voice, he simply uses a stick to beat his box. Lagosians who hear that sound know that the cobbler is around!

The aggressive bus conductor calling passengers

Oshodi! Ikoyi!! Lekki!!! If you are on Lagos roads, you will be used to the bus conductors inviting different passengers to board their buses to different Lagos destinations. They shout at the top of their voice. If you are not careful, you may be hassled to enter the wrong bus.

The booming music from roadside loudspeakers

Strategically placed at bus stops, parks and markets to get noticed, the seller plays music on giant loudspeakers in other to attract potential customers or buyers.  It remains to be seen if this music actually gets the attention of customers and translates into sales.

Facts were collected on the conduct and process of voting results at Independent Electoral commission.

EVALUATION OF VOTING EQUIPMENT

In the recent years, voting equipments which were widely adopted may be divided into five types:
 (1) Paper-based voting: The voter gets a blank ballot and use a pen or a marker to indicate he want to vote for which candidate. Hand- counted ballots is a time and labor consuming process, but it is easy to manufacture paper ballots and the ballots can be retained for verifying, this type is still the most common way to vote.

DEMOCRACY AND ELECTION

Human race, under the influence of the almighty God, hunger for spiritual peace, aesthetic satisfying industrial productivity, and productivity allows the sharing of the plentiful rather than fighting over scarcity. It provides tie for spiritual, aesthetic and family matters. It allows society to delegate special skills to institutions of religion, justice, education and preservation of civil liberty.

EFFECT OF MENSTRUATION ON GIRLS AND THEIR EDUCATION

Effect of Menstruation on Girls and their Education
Effect of Menstruation on Girls and their Education
Many myths and taboos still hover around menstruation and lead to negative attitudes towards this normal phenomenon and woman experiencing it. After menarche, girls are faced with the challenges related to management of menstruation (WHO and UNICEF 2013). World Bank statistics highlight shows absence of approximately 4 days every 4 weeks (World Bank, 2015). There are usually difficulties in measuring absenteeism and its causes especially when linked to menstruation. There are differing opinions on the impact of lack of menstrual hygiene in Nepal. It was reported that menstruation has a very small impact on school attendance, estimating that girls miss a total of 0.4% days in 180days of a school year, while improved sanitary technology had no effect on reducing this small gap (Oster and Thornton, 2010). In a randomized study, girls who used menstrual cup were no less likely to miss school during menstruation.

What is Puberty

Puberty In Girls
Puberty In Girl Child
Puberty is a key process, when it comes to human development into adulthood, and this usually involve the most rapid physical growth the human undergoes except for pre-natal and neonatal growth. (Brooks, 1988).
The force behind puberty is hormonal changes and this is responsible for girls’ first menstrual experience (menarche), and boy’s first ejaculation (semenarche) (Brooks, 1988).
