1.2 Statement of Problem
The need for health data cannot be over emphasized on the Demand side, there are different users and uses of health statistics Information - people and patients, communities service providers,
Programmer managers policy-makers. Providers of funds, global Agencies and organizations. All need processed data on a range of health measurement areas including mortality and morbidity rates; disease outbreaks; determinants of health (such as nutrition, environment, and socio economic status): access, coverage an quality of service,
costs and expenditures, and equity. On thesupply side, various tools and methods are available including vital registration and census system household, facility and district surveys: routine clinic based data; disease surveillance systems; National health accounts and modeling.
Unfortunately, supply and demand in the health data/information are not currently in equilibrium with an over supply of data coexisting with large unmet needs for information, Morh?diiy is poorly measured wlfiile the coverage and costs of many
i interventions are not measured properly, and the statistical information needed to monitor equity is inadequate. Information dissemination is inconsistent and the use of infcrmaUnn to in four, decision-making is weak at all levels of the health-care L>ys!c:'Ti,Consequently, issue like necessary input, such as finance, materials and manpower can be estimated based on health statistics.
The defective nature of statistical report takes it toll on hospital administration in the areas of estimation, prediction, and decision making the defects identified are as follows:
- Incompleteness
- Inaccuracy
- Untimely
- Inadequate
- Poor manpower / inexperience.
Despite the introduction of health information management as a profession, many health institution management as a profession, many health institution in the country are still faced with the challenges of POOR MANPOWER to collect and collate statistics anemployed the services of non professionals so as to pay little or to minimize expenditure
The term good health policy depends on the quality of the information at the disposal of the administration.
In recent times, data and statistical reports has been seen to be!INCOMPLETE and may not be relevant for adequate health care delivery due to INACCURACY,
Health statistical information is either not available or where available is UNTIMELY and this may alter the relevance of such health statistics because it is required by the government and the International health agencies as well as Lhe hospital administration for decision making.
Due to the above mentioned deficiencies the research is geared towards identifying and providing a possible solution to such problems.
The broad objective of this study is to stress the importance (relevance and the usefulness; of health statistics on health care services in federal teaching hospital Abakaliki),
However, the specific objectives arevt

- To identify the role of health statistics in health care delivery system.
- To determine whether, health statistical data are properly stoned, documented and utilized in the hospital
- To determine the relationship between statistical data and decision making in the hospital.
