ABSTRACT
This study was on the relevance of health statistics on health care services in tertiary health institutions. In carrying out the study, the following objectives were set: to identify the role of health statistics in health care delivery ,j determine whether health statistical data are properly stored, documented and utilized in the hospital, determine the relationship between statistical data and decision making in hospitals, determine whether statistical data are consulted before decision making in hospitals
As well as determine whether statistical records are adequately utilized in planning and administration in hospitals. Literatures related to the study were reviewed. The descriptive research design was adopted in the actual execution of the study. The study population was made up of 3010 workers at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. Since the population size was to large, the Taro Yamane formular was used to derive a sample size of 97 respondents. The instrument employed was direct questionnaire which was personally distributed and retrieved by the researcher. The collated questionnaire were analyzed and presented in frequency table and in simple percentages. At the end of the analysis, the following findings were made that statistical records are properly documented and stored in tertiary health institutions, that statistical records are consulted before decisions are made, that statistical data are adequately used in planning and administration and that health statistics play a great role in decision making process and planning in tertiary health institutions. Based on the
findings, the researcher recommended among other things that provisions should be made for staff training and development in order to improve data collection and utilization.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of Study
It has been suggested that the proper collection, management and use of data/information ; within health care systems "will determine the system's effectiveness in detecting health problems, I defining priorities, identifying innovative solutions and allocating : resources to improve health outcomes (WHO 2001).
The relevance of health statistical data according to the government, private sectors, and other groups in the management of health care services is typically directed towards and through a set of I policy adopted by the government private sectors and other group in areas like health care delivery financing, pharmaceutical, health human resources and other Institution, In every aspect of life, day today activities, we make use of statistical data or statistics either in business, economics, Account, Art e.t.c. Data or figures collected from these activities are analysed to draw conclusion and for decision making.
Over the years, it has been discovered on a general note that the world cannot do without statistics and it's utilization a must in every organization as it aids in; proper planning and implementation by decision makers reliable data for analysis if not made available or properly collected for planning, being incorrect or inconsistent can result to under estimation in planning and in decision making depending on the organization.
As a matter of fact, a proper observation was made by the researcher and the following was noted to have contributed to the reasons for ineffectiveness and inefficiency in dissemination or collection of data for utilization in health care delivery and in service rendered to be inadequate; funding/dearth of funds, improper utilization of available resources, fraud, load transportation network, lack of awareness as to the complications accompanying improper collection of data e.t.c.
In proffering solution to these problems, there is need to emphasize on the relevance of health statistical data, the negative and the positive effect it will exact on the population and on an individuals life. Health statistics provides key indicators that helps us know about the condition of life of a country, it is important to know not only the health of an individual but also the health of the whole nation with the aid of an accurate sampling method so as to ascertain if the country is healthy or not. Service provision and delivery is an immediate output of the inputs to the health system such as the health work force, procurement and supplies, and finance. Increased input should lead to increased service delivery ensuring availability and access to health services as one of the major functions of a health system. Such services should meet a minimum quality standard. ;
Health and medical statistics incorporates a variety of data types such as births,deaths, manages, divorce, morbidity (incidence of disease in the population), mortality rate (number of people who die of a certain disease). Compared with the total number of people in a community or health industry which are sometimes called "vital statistics".
