Result of Field Performance of C. zizanioides and C. nigritanus

4.1.1    Growth on Land

Results of field performances showed that growth parameters varied in both species. The highest leaf length and width observed in C. nigritanus was 84 cm and 1.1 cm respectively, while, those in C. zizanioides were 66.5 cm and 0.9 cm respectively (Table 1).

The values obtained were further subjected to statistical test using chi-square test at 5 % level of significance. This revealed a χ2 - table value of 7.814 at (P < 0.05) and a χ2 - calculated value of 1.47.
Results of field performances also showed that there is a positive correlation between the leaf length and number of leaves (r = 0.873), leaf width and leaf length (r = 0.896) and between leaf width and number of tillers (r = 0.846) in C. zizanioides at 5 % level of significance (Table 2a). In C. nigritanus, the leaf length only correlates positively with leaf width (r = 0.899) at 5 % level of significance (Table 2b).
