DETERMINATION OF DIHYDROCHACLONE CONTENT IN RICE VARIETIES

Abstract

Abakaliki rice is a very good species of rice grown in Abakaliki which is astonishingly sweet when cooked. The aim of the study is to determine the dihydrochaclone content in some selected rice varieties from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, southeastern, Nigeria. Thirty five varieties of rice sample used in this study were collected from Abakaiki. The dihydrochaclone content were estimated using Folin-

Ciocalteu photo-colometric method. The analysis showed that Okaufie variety had highest and significant content of dihydrochaclone with mean value of 0.71±0.9876. The following rice cultvars, Iron Oporoko, Fero 12, and 305 showed the least significant concentration of dihydrochaclone content with mean value of 0.66±.0.2118 respectively. The nutritional value of Abakaliki rice from the results shows that Abakaliki rice is richer in nutritional values compared to other conventional rice. Dihydrochaclone is highly medicinal and is good for human consumption. Dihydrochacloneare useful potential chemicals that have pharmacological activities such as; anti-protozoa, antimicrobial, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous activity.
