Effect of Vetiver on Fertilizer Plant Effluent.

The use of C. zizanioides to treat fertilizer plant effluent resulted in the following changes: Sharp fall in pH from day 2 to day 4, with a 12 % increase in day 6. There was a continuous reduction in BOD from day 2, with a 10 % reduction from day 4 to day 6. There was no change in COD in day 2, but 56 % reduction in day 4 and 8 % reduction in day 6 were observed. Fe and Co showed a slight decrease in day 2 (25 % and 33 % respectively), but rapid reduction in day 4. Fe, Co and Cd were also below detectable limits in day 6 (Table 4).

When fertilizer effluent was treated with C. nigritanus, the following changes were observed; Slight change (4 to 8 % decrease) in pH from day 2 to 6, BOD was continuously reduced by 52 % in day 2 to 67 % in day 6, COD rapidly reduced in day 2 (54 %), but steady to day 6 with only a 4 % change. Fe was steadily reduced (7 to 80 %), while Co showed slow reduction in day 2 (11 %), and below detectable limits in day 4. Cd and As were also reduced below detectable limits in day 6 (Table 4). 
T-cal values obtained from these parameters when treated with C. zizanioides and C. nigritanus are as follows: pH (1.073), BOD (-0.115), COD (-0.862), NO3- (-1.143), PO43- (-0.768), Zn (-2.482), Fe (-0.03), Co (1.000), Cd (1.000), Mn (1.056), As (1.000) (Table 5).

The results of the performance influence of Vetiver on wastewater from fertilizer plant are summarized in Table 4 below.
