Statement of the Problem
Physical Education as a school subject is mostly taught by primary school teachers using the traditional approaches. These approaches based on the researcher’s observation and research findings by previous researchers in and outside the country (Vikas, 2012; Clive, 2004) have not
really yielded the expected teaching outcome in terms of teaching effectiveness, knowledge retention, concretization etc that may lead to the overall achievement of the subject objectives particularly at the primary school level and among generalists trained teachers.
However, studies have shown that Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as tool aid the effective teaching and learning of most school subjects. The Physical Education in this sense may not be an exemption but the big questions that constitute the problem in this study was that; how can these Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) devices be use to promote effective teaching of Physical Education particularly among generalist trained teachers in elementary school? Which of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT5) devices can be use to enhance effective teaching of Physical Education among generalist trained teachers in Elementary schools?
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effective teaching of physical education through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT5) among generalist trained teachers in elementary schools.
Objectives
The objectives of the study among others are to:
1. Examine the relationship between the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and effective teaching of physical education among generalist trained teachers in elementary school.
2. Examine the common Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) devices that can be use by generalist trained elementary schools teachers towards the effective physical education teaching.
3. Ascertain whether generalist trained teachers have the knowledge and skill of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage for effective teaching of physical education at the elementary school.
Research Questions
For the purpose of the study, the following research questions were asked.
1. What is the relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and effective teaching of physical education among generalist trained elementary school teachers?
2. Which Information and Communication Technology (ICT) devices are use for effective teaching of physical education by generalist trained elementary school teachers?
3. What are the barriers to the usage of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) by generalist trained elementary school teachers in the teaching of physical education?
Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses were generated for the purpose of this study;
1. There is no significant relationship between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) usage and effective teaching physical education among generalist trained elementary school teachers.
2. There are no specific Information and Communication Technology (IT) devices that can be used significantly promote effective teaching of physical education by generalist trained elementary school teachers.
3. There is no significant difference between male and female generalist trained skills of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) usage for effective teaching of physical education.
4. There are no significant factors acting as barrier to generalist trained elementary school teachers towards the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT5) for the promotion of effective physical education teaching.
Significance of the Study
It is hoped that this study without doubt will help to fill the knowledge gap created on the promotion of effective teaching of physical education through Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by generalist trained elementary school teachers.
It will help to reveal the knowledge and skills of generalist trained elementary school teachers on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for effective teaching of physical education. It will also help to reveals the common Information and Communication Technology (ICT) devices use for promoting effective teaching of physical education. In addition, the study will revealed the barriers against generalist trained elementary school teachers on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for effective physical education teaching.
Information, findings and conclusion from the study will serve as literature materials and means of comparison to subsequent researchers who may carry out further studies in the area.
Delimitation/Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is delimited to generalist trained elementary school teachers in Warn South Local Government Area of Delta State. The study is also delimited to the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and effective teaching of physical education among generalist trained elementary school teachers.
Definition of Terms
Generalist: Trained elementary school
Teachers: These are set of teachers trained to teach all subjects in a given class irrespective discipline and specialization.
ICTs: These are electronic devices used for the transmission and receiving of information between two or more people.
Elementary School: Elementary school in this study refers to nursery and primary school where physical education and other relevant subjects are taught to children a foundational basis.
