Statement
of Problem
It has been observed that a lot of
grammatical errors are made in Nigerian newspapers. This has been of great
concern to scholars of English language. As a result of the importance of
grammar in English language, especially when it is used as a medium of
communication to the entire populace, the
researcher has decided to identify
the various types of grammatical errors inherent in selected Nigerian
newspapers, and implication for teaching and learning of English language.
1.2.
Purpose
of Study
The study had the following as it purpose:
(i)
To identify the
grammatical errors made in Nigerian newspapers.
(ii)
To find out the reasons
for these errors
(iii)
To identify the effects
of these errors in teaching and learning
(iv)
To identify the errors
which are more constantly used in Nigerian newspapers.
(v)
To offer suggestions in
the light of the information obtained for improvement of the quality of grammar
in Nigerian newspapers.
1.3.
The
Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to both mass
media and upcoming learners of the language, including society at large in
that:
(i) It
will help to identify the various types of grammatical errors which are
prevalent in Nigerian newspapers.
(ii) It
will help provide information that may be required for improving the quality of
grammar used in Nigerian newspapers.
(iii)
It will also help every
users of English language to find solution to the problem of grammars.
(iv)
It will provide a source
of information to the teachers, the learners, and the researchers who may be
interested in the area of study in the future.
1.4.
Scope
of the Study
To avoid elongation, the focus of the
study has been generated by the state of English language used in Nigerian
newspapers all over the country (Nig.); the scope of the study has been
restricted to two selected Nigerian newspapers only, the Guardian and Vanguard newspapers.
It has been restricted because of the need for indebt treatment of the problem
within the time available. Nevertheless, the literature available indicates
that over findings and conclusion will be generated to every other newspaper in
the country.

Does Nigerian Guardian and
vanguard newspapers commit grammatical errors in their publications?
(ii)
Why do the Guardian and Vanguard
newspapers commit grammatical errors in their publications?
CHAPTER TWO
REVIEW OF RELATED
LITERATURE
This chapter reviews and evaluates finding
on related literature of the other authors. It deals with definition of errors,
the meaning of grammatical errors, types of errors and the opinion of various
authors on the area where grammatical errors usually occur. Finally, some
causes of grammatical errors in the use of English language and it implication
on teaching and learning were also reviewed.
