2015 WAEC RESULTS Released, 61 per cent fail English/Maths

The West African Examinations Council has withheld the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results of hundreds of candidates from 13 states in the country.

This comes as the council stated that only 616, 370 candidates obtained credit in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. The candidates represented 38.68 per cent of the candidates who sat for the examination.

One million, five hundred and ninety-three thousand and four hundred and forty-two candidates, comprising 864,096 males and 729,346 females, sat for the examination.

The WAEC Head of National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu, made this known on Monday while releasing the result of the May/June 2015 WASSCE in Lagos.

He also announced that 118,101 candidates had their results withheld for alleged involvement in examination malpractice.

He explained, “Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 758,849 candidates, representing 47.62 per cent obtained six credits and above; 949,862 candidates, representing 59.61 per cent obtained five credits and above, while 1,114,988 candidates, representing 69.97 per cent obtained credit and above in four subjects.

“In addition, 1,295,915 candidates, representing 78.81 per cent obtained credit and above in three subjects, while 1,376,743 candidates, representing 86.40 per cent obtained credit and above in two subjects. However, 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68 per cent, obtained credit in five subjects and above, including English Language and Mathematics.”

To gain admission to the nation’s university, a candidate is expected to obtain credit in five subjects, including English and Mathematics

On the debtor states, the council alleged that they did not pay their candidates’ examination registration fees.

He, however, did not name the 13 debtor states.

The affected candidates, mainly government-sponsored candidates, Eguridu said, would only have their results if their states showed enough commitment to offsetting the debts.

The HNO said, “After reviewing the situation, the council has decided that the results of government-sponsored candidates of indebted states would be released if such states endeavour to produce bank guarantees, so that the council will be assured that the fees will be paid. This decision is in appreciation of the general prevailing economic challenges in the country, and in order not to jeopardise the educational careers of the candidates of the indebted states.”

Eguridu, who urged candidates to check their results on Tuesday, noted that public schools whose results were not on the council’s website should consider it to mean that their states were indebted to WAEC.

The council had, two weeks ago, threatened to withhold the results, claiming that 19 states owed it about N4bn debts arising from the examination registration fees.

Meanwhile, the Education Rights Campaign has condemned the West African Examination Council’s decision to withhold results of candidates from states that have defaulted on the body’s registration fees.

The ERC National Coordinator, Mr. Taiwo Soweto, in a statement in Lagos on Monday, described the directive as ‘insensitive’ and called on the examination body to reverse its decision immediately.

According to the group, withholding the results of candidates from affected states would be an ethical violation of the provisions of the Child Right Act 2003.

The statement read, “As a public institution, WAEC is obligated by the Child Right Act (2003) to make the best interest of the child the paramount consideration in all actions.

WAEC RESULT- Tension in the Air as Waec Releases her 2015 Reult

There is palpable tension in the air, particularly in some of the states suspected to be owing the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), as the examination body may release the result of its 2015 May/ June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) today.

The Head of Nigeria’s Office of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu, is billed to address the media today at the examination office in Yaba, Lagos. Meanwhile, investigations by New Telegraph has revealed that in some of the states suspected to be owing WAEC the registration fees of their sponsored public schools’ candidates including Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Ekiti, and Ondo, some of the candidates who sat for the examinations are afraid WAEC may withhold their results as it earlier vowed.

It would be recalled that WAEC during a media briefing two weeks ago had threatened not to release the results of candidates from those it described as indebted states, saying the debt, which was quoted to be over N4 billion was already hampering the smooth operation of the examination body.

Speaking to New Telegraph, a candidate from Osun State, who craved anonymity, said it was one thing to be scared of either success or failure but it was a different kettle of fish when a candidate is unaware whether the result will be released or not. According to the candidates, though there were assurances from government sources that the debt would be paid, “one can no longer take the government for its words particularly since the unpaid workers’ salaries came up”.

Similarly, a candidate in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, said she would be shocked not to have her result released as she had already sat for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination test at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, and only the result will guarantee her the admission.

4bn WAEC debt: 402,000 candidates may forfeit 2015 admissions

No fewer than 402,000 candidates who sat for the May/ June Senior Secondary School Certificate examination conducted the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) may likely forfeit their admission into tertiary institutions for this academic session.
This is owing to the threat by the exam body to withhold the results of the affected candidates whose states failed to pay for their examination fees totaling over N4billion.
There is the fear that the candidates may be shut out of this year's admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, if the council makes good its threat to withhold their results. Investigations revealed that most of the candidates wrote the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation (JAMB) as 'awaiting result candidates'
A senior staff at the Yaba Head office of WAEC disclosed that about 402,000 candidates who wrote the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate examination (WASSCE) may not get their results to be released in less than two weeks from now.
The Head, National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Mr. Charle Eguridu, warned that unless the 19 defaulting state governments pay the over N4billion debt owned the council, the results of their candidates would not be released.
Sunday Sun learnt that one of the affected states had already paid the registration fees of their candidates barely 72 hours after the council threatened not to release the results of its candidates. However, the management of WAEC has refused to disclose the names of the remaining 18 states which are yet to respond to the threat. The HNO further said the management was yet to receive any invitation from House of Representatives which had at one of its plenary sittings promised to look into the case. Making clarification on the statement credited to Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, seeking to know whether the non payment of examination fees included both public and private schools, Eguridu said that the N4billion debt owed the council by the states is for only public candidates the states sponsored.
The decision by the management of WAEC to withhold the results of some candidates on account of debt for the registration fees for May/ June 2015 WASSCE is already causing anxiety among candidates and their parents. The inability of the affected states to meet their obligation on the alleged N4billion debt may not be unconnected with the financial difficulties being experienced by some states that couldn't even pay the salaries of their workers for months. Speculations are rife that two states, one in the South West and another in the South East that were badly affected by the financial crunch are on the WAEC debtors' list.
The management of WAEC had earlier last week revealed that 19 states owed the council over N4billion for the registration fees of their sponsored candidates for the May/June 2015 WASSCE and gave the affected states two weeks to settle the debt or the results of their candidates would be withheld.
