Reasons You Should Cook At Home Instead of Eating Outside

Reasons You Should Cook At Home Instead of Eating Outside

Variety of Dishes lavishly and tastefully displayed to invite and tempt Lagosians who want to feed their stomach. At Mama puts or Bukkas dotted around the city, you find bankers, civil servants and artisans jostling to buy food at these spots.  Madam give me Amala with efo riro, shaki, roundabout and pomo-they shout at the top of their voices.

In other cases, if you don’t like mama put, then the fancy restaurants is the place you frequent. While you regularly patronise these restaurants every day, have you ever considered cooking for yourself?

Of course, you are very busy and you have to leave home at 4am and return at 10pm and this will not give you time to cook. Perhaps, these reasons shared will encourage you to cook instead of eating out every day.

You can trust what you eating

For those who eat out often, they are not in the know of the kind of ingredients that have been used in preparing the food. It what they are served that they eat. But if you cook at home, you have the discretion to add the content you without any worries.

You hone your cooking skills

Men have the tendency to eat out more than women even though you find both genders at the mama put. Regardless, if you want to improve or hone your cooking skills, it is not by visiting restaurants. You can find time out of your tight to cook. For the men who cook at home, they can brag to friends about their cooking skills and they can show off their cooking skills to their significant other. It is definitely a wonderful feeling.

You save money

You have to spend nothing less than N500 to eat at your favourite restaurants daily. But if you cook, you won’t spend such an amount. Every penny is worth saving in this current recession.

TAXONOMY OF TOMATO

Tomato belongs to the family Solanaceae (also known as night shade family), genus Solanum, sub family Solanoidaeae and tribe Solaneae. (Taylor., 1986). The genus include a small collection of cultivated and wild species like S. lycopersicum Milli, wild species like S.peruvianum, S.hirsum, S. glanduosam, S. pinpinellifolium, S.

cheesemannii. Taxonomists recently changed the name as Solanum lycopersicon. The tomato is native to Central and South America. It is a popular and versatile food. In tomato only fruits can be eaten since the leaves contain toxic alkaloids. The cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicon, is the second most consumed vegetable worldwide and a well studied crop in terms of genetics, genomics, and breeding. The tomato is a perennial plant but usually grown as an annual plant. It is reported that the tomato plant can reach up to 3metre. The stems are somewhat weak and often require staking or support such as a tomato cage. Branching at the base is monopodial, becomes sympodial higher up. The tomato leaves are 10 to 30cm long and unevenly imparipinnate compound with variously indented or lobed margins. Both the stems and the leaves are slightly rough and fuzzy. The inflorescence of tomato bare small yellow flowers has five pointed lobes on the corolla. The tomato fruits are fleshy berries green when unripe and become deep red and shiny when ripe. The tomato cultivars differ a great deal in size, shape and colour. There are also yellow, orange, green and brown varieties of fruits. The shape can vary from small cherry tomatoes, pear shaped tomatoes to large irregular shaped beefy tomatoes. The shape, size and colour of tomato decide their market value. Number of processed items prepared on large scale for consumption as well as for export using different varieties of tomato.

PRODUCTION OF TOMATO

Previously tomatoes were grown only during favourable season, but nowadays tomatoes are grown round the year. Because of its economic importance, area under cultivation is increasing every year. The estimated area and production of tomato for India are about 3,50,000 hectares and 53,00,000 tons respectively. Worldwide tomato production in 2005 totaled 29.9 million metric tons and production for the 2005/2006 season in Europe totaled 10.6 million metric tons.
Tomato is the second largest vegetable crop in India. The average productivity of tomato in our country (Nigeria) is merely 158 q/ha while its productivity in USA is 588 q/ha, in Greece 498 q/ha, in Italy 466 q/ha and 465 q/ha in Spain. Ten most promising states of India for tomato crop have been identified and utilized for further study on various aspects of tomato crop.
Bihar State in India is at leading position followed by UP and Orissa in terms of area under tomato crop. The maximum production and productivity have been showed by UP followed by Karnataka, Punjab, West Bengal and Assam. India’s export of value added tomato products was around 758.6 tons, which included 41tons of canned tomato products, 38 tons tomato juice valued at and 595 tons ketch-up in the year 2005-2006. This accounts for than thousand crores to the Indian economy even with least price like three rupees per kilo. This significant achievement in tomato production is possible due to the development of high yielding varieties/hybrids, breeding for biotic and abiotic stresses, resistance and heterosis breeding.

SPECIES OF TOMATO FRUIT

There are around 7500 tomato varieties grown for various purposes. Heirloom tomatoes are becoming increasingly popular, particularly among home gardeners and organic producers, since they tend to produce more interesting and flavourful crops at the cost of disease resistance and productivity. (Allen,. 2008)
In 1973, Israeli scientists developed the world’s first long shelf-life commercial tomato varieties. (Yissum, 2013)
Tomato varieties are roughly divided into several categories , based mostly on shape and size.

• Slicing or globe tomatoes are the usual tomatoes of commerce, used for a wide variety of processing and fresh eating.
• Beefsteak tomatoes are large tomatoes often used for sandwiches and similar applications. They have kidney-bean shape, thinner skin, and shorter shelf life makes commercial use impractical.
• Oxheart tomatoes can range in size up to beefsteaks, and are shaped liked large strawberries.
• Pear tomatoes are pear shaped, and are based upon the San Marzano types for richer gourmet paste.
• Cherry tomatoes are small and round, often sweet tomatoes generally eaten whole in salads.
• Grape tomatoes, a more recent introduction, are smaller and oblong, a variation on plum tomatoes, and are used in salads.
• Campari tomatoes are also sweet and noted for their juiciness, low acidity and lack of mealiness. They are bigger than cherry tomatoes, but are smaller than plum tomatoes.

Finally the best variety of tomato for tomato paste happens to be the PLUM TOMATO. It is also known as a processing tomato or paste tomato, is a type of tomato bred for sauce and packaging purposes. They are generally oval or cylindrical in shape, with significantly fewer locules (seed compartments) than standard round tomatoes (usually only two) and a generally higher solid content, making them more suitable for processing.
Plum tomatoes are also sometimes favoured by cooks for use during the tomato off-season, as they are generally considered more amenable to handling and are therefore available in a state closer to ripe than other super market tomatoes.

10 MUST-HAVE ITEMS TO KEEP IN YOUR VEHICLE

Perhaps you’ve been driving yourself for a long time? Or you just got your first car? The experience can be very exciting and at the same time intriguing. The joy of owning a car becomes short-lived when the car develops a fault on motion and you don’t have a personal driver. It feels like you’ve made a terrible mistake buying a car especially when it breaks down in the middle of nowhere. But not to worry!

We Share 10 items that you must keep in your vehicles to assist you in the midst of car breakdown:

1.   A basic toolkit:  You don’t want to weigh your car down too much, but you never know when an emergency might call for the use of a few basic tools, like screwdrivers, a tyre gauge, a jack and tools to help you remove a tyre. Your car might already come with a basic toolkit. Check your handbook for where to find it.

2.   A map:

While you’re probably able to find your location using your mobile phone (only when safely parked of course), you know that you’re bound to have no battery just when you really need it. There’s no harm in keeping an old fashioned map in your boot just in case you find yourself getting lost without your phone to help you.

3.    A basic first aid kit:

You never know when you might need to carry out some basic first aid while out on the road, whether it’s an accident you’ve been involved with, or one you’ve witnessed. Make sure you’ve always got items such as bandages, gauze, tape and disinfectant in the car.

4.    A spare in-car mobile phone charger:

Especially if you’re a female driver driving alone, it’s crucial that you can call for help in an emergency, so always make sure you have a spare in-car charger in your car. You can buy a USB car charger quite cheaply, so all you have to do is connect the appropriate cable for your phone. Alternatively, you could get hold of a cheap spare mobile phone and keep it fully charged in your car in case you ever need it.

5.   A torch:  This is a simple one but could really help if you find yourself in trouble when it’s dark, especially if there aren’t any street lights (especially when NEPA takes light).

6.   Warning triangles:

If you break down you may find warning triangles helpful to warn approaching drivers of an obstruction in the road. Also, if you’re driving abroad, depending on the country you could end up with a fine if you don’t have warning triangles in your car.

7.    Spare engine coolant, oil and windscreen fluid:  This one’s a no-brainer, especially if you regularly drive long distances. Make sure you check your oil, water, antifreeze and screen wash levels regularly to avoid coming into difficulties on a long journey. You should also keep some spare supplies in the car just in case you run out while away from home. Only check or top up your engine coolant when the engine is cold (i.e. you haven’t driven the car for a while), as it’s a pressurised container.

8.    Spare warm clothing:  We all know how cold it can get during rainy season, so pack a jumper or two, or maybe a blanket, in case you’re stuck waiting in or out of your car for a while.

9.    The contact numbers for your insurance and towing companies:  Again, don’t rely on your mobile phone for this one. Just note down the key numbers for both your insurance and towing companies (including both Customer Service and the Claims Line, plus the emergency numbers if there are any) on a piece of paper and keep it somewhere safe – perhaps in the glove box of the car.

10.Jump leads:  If you suddenly discover your car battery is dead, having a set of jump leads in your car will hopefully save you, providing a sympathetic driver stops to help, or you have someone to call who can come to your aid.

Opera to offer free Wi-Fi via WOW car in India

The WOW car will hit the road in phases, first covering the northern belt of India. After Agra, the WOW car will travel around Lucknow. Its next stops are Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad.

NEW DELHI: Opera Software has launched Web on Wheels (WOW), featuring a specially-equipped WOW car that provides free Wi-Fi access to those in range.

Over the next 10 months, the WOW car will travel across India, covering 20 cities. Agra, the city of Taj Mahal was its first stop. The car was stationed at multiple locations, such as Raja Mundi, Paliwal Park, Sadar Bazar, St. John's College, among other notable locations throughout the city.

The WOW car will hit the road in phases, first covering the northern belt of India. After Agra, the WOW car will travel around Lucknow. Its next stops are Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad.

Opera hopes to encourage new users to get online and experience the internet from their mobile phones, the company said in a statement.

The WOW car will offer 20 minutes of free internet access to users. There is no limit to the amount of data that can be used during this time or the websites and apps that can be used with this free internet service.

"Today, almost everyone has a mobile handset that is capable of accessing the internet. However, many users are reluctant to use the mobile internet due to a lack of awareness or the perceived high cost", says Sunil Kamath, Vice President for South Asia & South East Asia at Opera Software. "We hope Web on Wheels can help in lowering the barriers for new users to come online."

"At Opera, we strive to bring the web to everyone. This year marks our 20th anniversary. With Web on Wheels, we want to give something back to our users and hope to help more people see how fun and educational it is to be on the web," adds Kamath.

More than 55 million users in India already use Opera web browsers. Opera Mini is a fast web browser that shrinks webpages by up to 90% of their size, helping users save on mobile data. Opera is also taking the Web on Wheels initiative as an opportunity to engage with its millions of users from India's Tier II and Tier III cities.
