It's similar to the familiar low-carb diet, with tweaks. On the Eco-Atkins Diet, non-animal protein sources -- think white beans, black pinto beans and garbanzo beans -- are your friends. The diet calls for 31 percent of daily calories to come from plant proteins, 43 percent from plant fats and 26 percent from carbs. But one expert called a sample menu "very unappealing," and the panel wasn't pleased by the lack of guidance or resources for dieters. On a positive note, Eco-Atkins scored well for short-term weight loss.

12 (tie) The Engine 2 Diet

The Engine 2 Diet was created by a firefighter and former pro athlete whose great-grandfather co-founded the Cleveland Clinic, and whose father, a physician and Army surgeon, led research on preventing heart disease through a plant-based diet. In Engine 2, you're either a "firefighter," chopping all animal products, processed foods and vegetable oils from your diet, or a "fire cadet," making more gradual changes. Experts agreed that the low-fat, vegan diet appears most beneficial in terms of heart health, but would likely also lead to short-term weight loss.

Despite the name, you probably won't find mayonnaise on the Mayo Clinic Diet's special food pyramid. The "Live It!" phase focuses on servings from different groups that make up the food pyramid. Experts approved of the diet's nutritional profile, safety and ability to prevent or treat diabetes or heart disease. However, they noted there's not much evidence yet to show how well it works for weight loss.
