1.3. Purpose of the Study on Effect of Teaching Aids in the Teaching of Mathematics

It is believed that the availability and adequate use of teaching aids could be of great impact, yielding positive results, while its non availability and moderate use could lead to poor performance of students in a teaching and learning situation.

The main purpose of this study is to find out if the availability and effective use of mathematics teaching aids will improve and motivate the student’s performance in mathematics.

1.1.        Research Questions

The research questions which the study attempts to answer are as follows:
(1) What are the attitudes of prospective secondary school mathematics teachers towards instructional or teaching aids in a lesson?
(2) Is there any significant difference in the attitude of prospective secondary school mathematics teachers’ pre and post instructional aids in a lesson?
(3) What kind of things affects the attitudes of prospective secondary school mathematics teachers towards teaching materials and lesson?

1.2.        Research Hypothesis

The following hypotheses were formulated to facilitate the study.
i)                There is no significant effect between teacher’s experience on instructional aids and students academic performance in mathematics.
ii)              There is no significant effect between teacher’s academic qualification and student’s performance in mathematics.
iii)            There is no significant effect between teacher’s knowledge of subject matter and senior secondary school student’s academic performance in mathematics.

1.3.        Scope of the Study

The study is intended to cover secondary schools within Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The following schools will be sample because they have written the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). These includes:
(1) Essi College, Warri
(2) Dore Numa College, Warri
(3) Supreme College, Warri
(4) Lord’s and Kings Academy, Warri
(5) Classical International School, Warri.

1.4.        Significance of the Study

It has been postulated that an effectiveness teaching and learning process require the maximum use of teaching aids. Findings from this research would help mathematics teachers perhaps make necessary adjustment towards improving or altering their teaching method in mathematics and thus will go a long way in helping to improve the performance of students in mathematics tests and examination.
This work could also reveal the crucial problem facing the provision and use of teaching aids in the teaching and learning of mathematics and the solution of some of these problems in order to improve the standard of mathematics teaching and learning. This research work is also beneficial to students of mathematics because a lesson with instructional materials remove abstraction and make understanding easier thereby enhancing huge success on the part of both students and teachers.

It will help to increase literature, it will enable ministry of education, curriculum planners and parents to know some of the problems confronting the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools and make appropriate solution to the problem.
