Meaning of Biology

Many times people equal science and biology. It is not true because science is so wide while biology is limited to some certain areas. A cursory looks at the Greek word of biology which comes from the words ‘Bio’ which means ‘Life’ while ‘Logos’ mean ‘knowledge’. The Oxford English Pocket Dictionary defines biology as the study of life and structure of living things e.g. plants and animals.

It is clear that biology is a division of natural science that deals with organisms or materials. The study of living organisms are divided into many specialized fields which are zoology and botany.
M.C. Michael (1990) sees biology as a branch of natural science that involves the study of living things and it also concern their taxonomical relationships with other organisms.
Sarojin (1990) sees biology as a branch of natural science that involves the study of living things and it also concern their taxonomical relationships with other organisms.
According to G. Idodo (1996) stated that biology is a branch of science that deals with the relationship between living and non-living things and their basic characteristics which distinguish them.
I will go further to say that the general meaning of biology is the study of living things and their vital processes because biology covers such a broad area like genetic, micro-biology, biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, ecology, parasitology, taxonomy, evolution etc.
