Contribution of Mass Media to Moral Decadence

Nicholas Johnson is of he view that television educates us away from life and far away from our individuality. It drives us to line up at the counters of drug stores and supermarkets, shaping our needs and wants and ultimate us into the molds that are the products. Not only does it explicitly peach conspicuous consumption, status consciousness, sex exploitation and fantasy words of quick solutions even the settings and subliminal message are commercial for the consumption style of life. Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only indispensable but positive hindrance to the elevation of mankind. Henry David theory, it casual mention on television can affect viewer's attitudes and behaviour.
Little reported that the romance of movies not just in those stories and those people on the screen but in the adolescence dream of meeting others who feel as you do about what you have seen. It would be extremely difficult for young people on the basis of what they see now in the movies to have any clear picture of the important things in the country and the world, and the things human beings must believe. Our media apparently are suggesting to them that nothing is important, that everything is absurd and ridiculous and utterly trial. And this is intolerable. Kenneth B. Clark Prof of psychology at City College of the University of New York). According to Biagi (1989), infact, it has been speculated that the mass media set the agenda for much of what we do. The media are often telling us what should and should not be important to us socially, culturally, educationally, politically and economically.

The trouble being born in the television age is that if discourages concentration. You consume not what you choose and when but what they choose and which. Robert Marchiel Biagi pointed out that almost anything interesting and rewarding in life requires same constructive consistently applied effort. But television encourages us to apply no effort, it sells us instant classification. It diverts us only to make the time pass without pain, in short, a lot of television usurps one of the most precious of all human gift, the ability to focus your attention yourself, something that only human beings and do.
It was adopted a method of doing this to capture our attention and hold it which is the prime motive of most television programming. The school is the only place of young people, person's regular environment where television isn't until recently. To the extent that schools and universities feels that the only way of reading the minds of the young people is by importing the values of television. This does not mean television should not be in school but in a limited sense, it should be a useful tool which can be specifically used for instruction but the problem is that the tendency to surrender to the ethos that television subtly portrays the idea that things are gotten easily, with little effort, information can be absorbed passively, that by watching pictures children are absorbing as much information as they might through print.
Another study of more than low middle – school students ages 12 – 14 found that those with bedroom television were twice as likely to start smoking even after controlling for such risk factors as having a parental or friend who smokes or low parental engagement. By some estimates, half of American  children have a television in their bedroom one study of the third grades out the number at 70 percent and a growing body of research shows strong association between television shows in the bedroom and numerous health and educational problems. One of the most obvious consequence is that the child will simply end up watching more television and many parents won't even known.
It has also been shown that Americans spend more time watching television than they do on any other activity except sleeping. By the time most young people gradual from high school they have spent more time watching television than they have in the classroom, they will have in the classroom, they will have logged 20,000 hours of television viewing and 13, 000 hours in school. Young children watch an average of 30 hours of television a week. A survey indicate that by the age of 18 the average American youth will have watched some 15 hours of television. Biagi pointed out that in our grand parents eyes, such prodigious waste our God-given time would have been sinful because that time was not used constructively for self improvement for building moral character and for shaping our own destinies.
Studies have shown that students who were heavy television, viewers were able to raise their grade by decreasing their television viewing.
Henderson (1985), noted that children who watch large amount of television may tend to over look other family members as role models in establishing goals and forming values. Instead they form their goals and values based on what they see on television which might be unrealistic and violent because television tends to be unrealistic in tits portrayal of life. According to him the characters and people on television and what they are meant to entertain and inform us and hold our interest, therefore, characters may be more beautiful and wealthier than average and the plots may involves more crimes and more sexual activity that exist in real life. Television was never meant to be a mirror to society but children may take that assumption.
Report has shown that the news paper format brought an end to book culture. The national institute for mental health (U.S) reported that excessive television viewing can lead to lower school achievement especially in reading, the book on literacy hoax further charges, "television effect on children is to create an expectation that learning should be easy passive and entertaining. The television addicts may thus find studying an ordeal. A spokes man for the west German association of book dealers lamented: we have become a nation of people who go home after work and fall asleep in front of the television, we are reading the average Australian child will have seen seven hours of television".
Some cable television networks bring pornography into the home and regular programming often provides a steady diet of car crashes, explosion, stabbings, shooting and karate kicks. But even this film rating does not repeat the basic rules of public decency – Jack Valenti. A monumental review study published by the national institute of mental health in 1982 also linked exposure to media violence with aggressive behaviour in American children. At the seminar for selected principles of secondary schools and teachers training colleges in the federation held in Lagos on the 12th and 13th July 1977, mass media was seen as one of the main factor responsible for the causes of moral laxity among students. The seminar maintained that the mass media tends to over sensationalize new items including those from schools and the mass media organization was also criticized for politicizing material that corrupt morals of juveniles. British researcher Williams Belson found that "boys who thrived in violent television show were more likely to engage in violence of a serious kind". He also exclaimed that television violence and incite swearing and the use of hold language, aggressiveness in sport of play threatening to use violence in another boy writing slogans on walls and breaking windows. While you may think yourself immune to such influences. Belson's study found that exposure to television violence did not change the boys conscious attitude toward violence the steady diet of violence apparently chipped away at their subconscious inhibitions against violence'. Though it does not necessarily mean that television must be viewed as an inherently evil. Researcher indicate that violence in television can make children become less sensitive to suffering and pain of others, they may become afraid of the world around them and they may behave in a more aggressive and sometimes harmful manners. This portends dangerous consequence for our society.
