THE CAUSE OF INDECENT DRESSING AMONG STUDENTS IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA

Indecent Dressing

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to investigate students’ perception of the causes of indecent dressing among students in higher institutions in Delta State. To direct the study, three research questions were stated and tested. The study adopted the survey research design and the population of the study comprised all students in College of Education, Warri. The sample size for the study was two hundred (200) respondents randomly selected from ten departments in the College of Education, Warri. Data for the study were collected using researcher’s developed questionnaire. In analyzing the data collected,
the researcher used simple percentage to test the research questions. The data analyzed revealed that the society, parents and their parenting, wrong usage of the internet, pressure from friends and the sinking values of our culture are factors that influence indecent dressing in higher institutions of learning; sexual harassment, campus prostitution, poor performance, lying, stealing and ritual killings are implications of indecent dressing in higher institutions of learning and that parents acting as role models, dress codes, mass media, religious institutions and formation of campus brigades are possible solutions to indecent dressing in higher institutions of learning. Based on these findings, some recommendations were made at the end of the study.
