PSYCHO-SOCIAL FACTOR INFLUENCES CHOICE OF TEACHING 2

According to Amali (1999), choosing a career is one of the most disturbing problems that have hindered the technological advancement of our nation. UNICEF (2004) female teachers allow greater control of their families positively, influence, and produce other health and social developmental benefits.

However, many scholastic efforts have been made to identify the reason behind these problems. For instance, Adedeji (2009) identify that females are influenced in teaching as career are adversely affected by socio-economic factors, such as financial condition of the family, social expectations for female education, customs and religious values. Similarly, Babalola (2009) in his study identified additional factors that negatively affect females educational quest in Nigeria, these factors include females’ natural disinterestedness in furthering their education, early marriage, marital obligation to husbands, children, labour demands, educational background of parents, social value for female education, peer and siblings’ influence and gender discrimination against female education.

It is against this background that this study was designed to examine the extent to which psycho-social factors influence the choice of teaching among female students.
