Marital Obligation Influence and Female Teaching Aspiration

Marital means having to do with marriage life; hence Nwani (2001) noted that marriage is a contract between a man and a woman who agrees to live together as husband and wife. Bimbo (2001) expresses that marriage is a partnership in which the spirit of give and take abound and it is a union of two forgivers living together.

Ayodele (2000) puts it that marriage is an institution that appears to remain the most desired and practiced  in all generation and cultures without which adulteration of the basic principles or modes of formation, composition, goals, challenges and sustenance. This is because of the operative nature of marriage in every human and culture which promotes and perpetuates its existence. It is obvious that people define the term marriage from their own view and understanding of the concept of marriage.
Marital obligation is among the socio-economic factors that are suspending females’ educational ambition and teaching as a profession. Oni (2009) who in his study revealed that marital obligations of the woman to the children and to her husband adversely affect her educational aspirations.
The reasons could be ascribed to the fact that the marital burden placed on women by customs and traditions in Nigeria and in almost all African countries which make women strictly tied to their husbands and children’s apron string, makes the issue or problem of marital obligations a strong militant against females educational aspiration and pursuit thereby taking teaching as a profession.
